Recently had the need to drain sump after my 850 wet sumped in ten days to point of fully exposing the oil screen in the tank.
Found this on the magnetic drain plug:

Shrapnel in Sump

Looks to be remains of some sort of washer, maybe a shim. My calipers show it to be 0.114" wide and about 0.023" thick.

Reviewing the parts diagrams for crankcase and pistons, only thing that might match is the crank endfloat shim. AN lists that as 0.003" thick? And this bit's radius does not look like its from a large diameter item.

Thoughts?

Danger Will Robinson...

What it is, I would think, is now secondary to the other piece(s) of the mother washer that birthed it. If its' mother spawns more offspring your engine rebuild will be considerable more expensive as it was not designed to be a whelping box.

I'd start by removing the rocker covers, see if any mischief has found its way there, next the timing cover, same mission. The next set of steps are painful, but I believe that it is very important to know what's going on so you can make an informed decision(s) before risking the engine.

Your timing was very good. I hope that your fix(s) will save the day and not destroy your bank account...just when the riding is peaking.

Best.

Amazing it got to where it got to. That's a lunker piece. I've pulled some weird pieces of this and that out from the center of my sump screen, but nothing a magnet would catch. Besides I don't have a magnet. Not helpful I know.

It's not that shim.

Curious thing is it must be something found normally inside crankcase and/or piston undersides...as how could something find its way down to the sump if in TC, rocker boxes? Are the pushrod tunnels essentially sealed from the crankcase as they only lead down to the cam followers?
Of course it could be a lost/dropped washer from some previous case work or even the factory floor.

what would be the approx radius of the curved? there is a round washer on the sump filter, nothing from the top end should be able to get into the sump, so it must be from inside, its not shiny enough to have come from the main brearings unless its part of a cage, , there is a bevel washer on the right end of the cam, i realise none of the items i've mentioned are happy thoughts... let me know if theres anything i can help with

Time to pull down and fix what has happened inside, sometime you can be lucky and not do any major damage but what ever you need to split the cases, if I found something like that my motor would be pulled out and on the bench stand straight away, you could be lucky and find the other bit on the bottom of your crank cases.

Stuck to magnet so yes.
So that clears that up... I wonderif it was some how lodged in a pipe or oilway and is connected with wetsumping now it has made its way down to the oil filter? It looks tobe part of a rather large od washer or shim? Do you have an oil filter with screw on changable element?

Just has the standard 850 disposable type oil filter, not changeable internal element if that's what you meant.

Might try lining it up with some different diameter washers to get an idea of the overall diameter....

I really don't have the facilities (and maybe faculties??) to perform an engine removal/teardown in my condo's parkade. Looks like I'd need to get her to a pro for this...

not sure if I would get over exercised about it...how long have you had the bike?

AN's image of the sump filter round washer:

Way too large for my deritis...

The Od does look pretty big.. If it were mine i might consider lifting the barrel and head and see if either the cam or the crank is flopping about . It could be its come through the pump gears

This is the fourth season I've had it. Put about 8k Miles on it in that time, on top of the 7k showing on the clock when it came off the trailer (15k total). Had the head off after last season for failed copper HG. When I pulled the rocker spindles before sending head off for valve work, discovered two were missing their thrust washers....but again I cannot see how they'd make it down to the sump.

Had it out two days ago, going really nice save for an un-moving speedo needle and a flakey SparkBright LED.
