I am wondering how many unrestored, original black(or any color) Combats are left, unmolested, original bikes , with no mods? photos?

Jimbo ... I could take off all the new parts and replace them with the old originals and maybe beat up the frame a bit if you are sure that`s what you want .... bike has traveled 7600 miles since April 1972 .... looks pretty good would not like to trash it to sell but if price is right eh! ... after all it is now 2016 and I got a bad leg ... bike has never been restored , really I just kept it up and improved it in some areas as time passed .... `prolly what you would do , when you find your dream bike ...

Sounds nice, Got any photos? Original black paintwork? Original black frame finish & parts?

Many I suspect, as there are still a few one owner bikes out their - spoke to a couple this week already, didn't say whether they were Combats or not though. Also considering that I hear of one owner Domi's and singles on regular basis, there must be some Combats languishing somewhere.

Here's my unrestored Combat Commando. In this photo it is wearing a reproduction seat, but I also have the original (great condition) seat safely stored away to preserve it.

Besides the Avon Roadriders, the bike is practically all original and low mileage. Great bike. Last year it won "Best Preserved British" at the National Motorcycle Museum Vintage Rally.

Not 100% certain, but think this was original paint job and mostly original bits (other than saddle).
Bought it February of 2014 from second owner who had it for 20 years.

It's YELLOW now!

Crooked Norton logo and all!

Yep, it bugs me, but it's original so it'll stay that way. The bike has nice original paint and graphics, just a little wear from polishing over the years. The right side logo is straight, but the left side has that downward slope.

That doesn't look like original paint. The shape of the "D" stripe is off, the Norton logo looks to be missing the black outline, and the position of the side cover graphics is too low.

But the tank logo is crooked just like yours! :P

Jimbo ..... my bike is hardly original .... I was making a joke ..... I painted the frame 'bout 15 yrs ago .... the tank and panels were redone about 6 years ago ..... the list of replacement parts is lost in the passage of time .... although this year it's been : MadAss ( Don Pender's ) front and rear 19" alloys with SS spokes , SS axles with all new spacers and bearings and TT100's , brakes front ( pads ) and back ( shoes ), new cush drive pads , steering damper , Dave Taylor head steady with spring , new headlight ears and I replaced the bent original gear box adjuster bolt .... the engine is original except the top end was refreshed in early 80's ( rings, pistons out to first OS ) , bottom end untouched ... I would be willing to take the bike apart and ship it to you with all take off parts plus the newer parts and boxes of extra stuff .... for a price ... I will get photos when it stops raining here and try and post them ... :D

Actually, they are significantly different (although both slightly off level)

Maybe the same guy after a few pints/joints at lunch on different days...

It tickles me to think that some people believe that there was strict, standard way of releasing Nortons from the factory.

My combat roadster 202206 still has the original tank and side covers.... on the shelf. Black gel coat...NO paint, no stripes at all just decals. Bought it in 1988...not running with 9K on the clock and later found it to have a bent 2S cam.

My brothers '70 750 "S" was like that, but with blue fireflake gelcoat, man ! what a deep luscious finish that was for a bike.

yea ,the, early fiberglass tanks were colored metalflake in the gelcoat,I didn't know the 1973 black fiberglass (?) tanks were like that  (my green fastback tank was a solid British Racing green gelcoat with a candy apple green paint over it, but thats another thread :) .

There wouldn't have been any fibreglass tanks for 1973, they had been outlawed by then.
Combats were all 1972 models, don't forget.
Thats why the steel Roadster and Interstate tanks appeared (for 1973. ?)

The steel strap bolted under the frame at the back of the tank also helped to keep the tank restrained in an accident...

I recently enquired about some gelcoat finished sidecovers, and the quality of the gelcoat.
When the supplier started talking about sanding the sidecovers for painting them, WTF ??

I don't know about regulations in other countries but fibreglass fuel tanks were not outlawed on new models in the UK until July 1973.

The factory began fitting steel Interstate and Roadster tanks during 1972, however, "Glass fibre" tanks are still listed in the 850 and 212278 750 parts book and "Fibreglass" is still specified for the Hi-Rider tank in the 1973 brochure so it isn't clear when the factory stopped fitting fibreglass fuel tanks altogether.

Posting this again. Photo is from 1973 and my first combat. Absolutely original 201123. Just rode it from Riverside to San Jose, California on the very new Interstate 5.
