If I sell a Norton on eBay and the buyer is in Canada (I'm in the North East US), what kind of responsibility do I have in terms of customs and whatnot? Are thee any forms that I have to fill out, and will it cost me anything extra?

Thanks

All the E-bay ads I see say, "shipping is the responsibility of the buyer", my guess is that they know the requirements and will engage a shipping company that has experience smuggling motorcycles into Canada

I ship parcels all over the world; Canada and Australia being the most popular non-US destinations. The customs form will ask 1) Description 2) Weight 3) Value 4) Country of Origin. The fact that it is a motor vehicle will trigger an inspection and the payment of importation taxes and fees (fees =subtle taxes--we got tons of those in Massachusetts).

I hope that you still have a Norton, I remember that you mentioned something about a low-side crash a while back; is this the bike?

I've never bought a motor vehicle from the US but a year or so back throngs of canuks were heading south to by new and used cars and trucks because it was a lot cheaper. The one that got me was skidoos, made here in Canada but thousands of dollars cheaper to buy across the border. Go figure.

I think the buyer will need to check with the MVD on this side to get the lowdown. Anything over 35 years qualifies as an antique so is duty free. It will be a whole lot easier for the buyer when he goes to register it if you have registration papers along with a bill of sale.

No, thanks for asking. It's my brother's 72 that sold yesterday. The high bidder for most of the week was a Canadian and bro' was afraid of customs and fees and such, so I posted the question here. A local guy won the auction at the last minute, so it's mute now.

One less Norton in the family though :(

I bought a motorcycle in N.Y. State and I am from Québec and here are the points I had to consider (Exporting from the U.S. and Importing to Canada) :

a) motorcycles 15 years or older are not subject to the technical updates otherwise required by Canada

b) the signed Title (with 3 copies) and a Bill of sale have to be in possession of the American Customs officer for a minimum of 3 days before you can move the motorcycle across the border

c) after 3 days, the American Customs officer will have made his verifications, give you back your papers, give you a release form, verifie the serial numbers on your bike and and you are ready to go...to the Canadian border!

d) the Canadian customs officer will want a copie of all of the forms above, verifie the serial numbers, charge you the Federal taxe and give you back a receipt and a form... and you are ready to go! Other taxes await you when you register the motorcycle in your own Province!!!
