I had a lot of health issues over the last year, that combined with the oil pressure Gremlins that I had after putting the engine back together severely limited my motivation. I finally got it together and put my timing chest back together. It appears that I found my oil pressure problems as I put over 100 miles on it yesterday and it never carried less than 30 pounds of oil pressure hot at 65 MPH. That's on a par with what it had before the engine rebuild.

I did a little clip of Trixie idling to share what it sounds like now. I don't think it sounds quite stock! Let me know what you think.

Please excuse the cluttered look of my garage. Now that the bike is up and running perhaps I'll get busy cleaning the place up. I hope you enjoy the clip, it's not very long. If you have a way of viewing this with a better sound system you might want to do that.

Good result !

What was the actual cause of the issue ?

There was a spacer behind the worm gear that wasn't supposed to be there.

It caused the end of the gear to ride against the snap ring holding the seal in place. Apparently, after about 5-6 miles the seal would get hot and allow the then hot/thin oil to bypass into the gear case causing the drop in oil pressure. There was a witness mark on the snap ring and the seal was hard and brittle.

Dan,
It sounds very healthy. You verified cam timing during assembly….10 chain links between timing dots on the intermediate and cam sprockets?

Yep. After I got it together, it didn't want to start. It was farting through the exhaust. I was afraid maybe I'd gotten it cam timing wrong. I put new plugs in it, charged the battery and put fresh gas in it, then I checked the ignition timing. It was 180° out. After I corrected that it fired right up.

It does seem to be pretty healthy. As you roll the throttle on it starts to run away with you when it hits about 3500 RPM.

It's fairly docile otherwise. It starts easily and runs about like a stock motor at lower RPMs.

Overall I'm very pleased with it.

What camshaft did you use?

Dan,
I like the way you have the oil pressure gauge setup. Is that custom made?If not, where did you find the mount it sits in?
Thanks,Mike

That's the Old Brits oil pressure gauge. It was on the bike when I bought it.

I'm a belt and suspenders kind of guy when it comes to oil pressure.
I also have a warning light.

I also have a warning light but would like to know more.

I credit the oil pressure gauge with saving my engine when the oil pressure issues arose. The gauge gave me warnings long before oil pressure dropped low enough to trigger the light.
I look at the light as a back up for when it is too dark to easily see the gauge.
