Sensors TRIAL

There are 2 temperature ranges to consider.

1. The range the temperature sensor detects and sends a signal to the ECU, in this case the top limit is 120C, so above 120C the signal not longer changes.

2. The range of temps the sensor can operate in and not be damaged. What is the top limit temp and on a 961 head how close to this temp does it get.

Its No2 that needs pinning down.

Thanks Tony.

Referring to FE's comment:
Being manually applied could easily lead to discrepancies in production. And if it’s as important to the function as it appears, this should be top of the list for fault finding I’d say.

I can't see that the amount of paste is that important in terms of it working or not working. The sensor is going to reach temperature eventually; enough paste to fill the air gap should mean it gets there a bit quicker.

I suppose I could test that theory when I get back to working on the bike again.

I spoke to Bosch and they said that it's likely the sensor will get damaged if used beyond its specified temperature range, which is up to 130C. I suppose if it's used in a "normal" application such as measuring the oil/water temperature in an engine, it wouldn't reach that limit. The oil temp on my car has never been above 110C.

So it's back to Tony's point about measuring the actual head temp, and perhaps someone could put a sensor in the oven and see what happens :).

From my electronics/ car modification days we used little heat sensitive stick-on colour changing strips. Must be still available.....

Confirmed 120 'C Taken from an ODB2 Sensor reading from the ECU itself

I have ordered the new JUMO head temp sensor from Norton . I will install it when it gets to me and let you guys know if anything happens !

I'm in the process of ordering one too along with a tilt sensor, just waiting for the invoice.

Hi Tony, did your JUMO probe arrive yet ? interested as the specs quoted on mine differ from the actual that arrived, the probe is 7.5mm at the base of the probe but only 4mm at the tip ?

Just curious on the spec if you have a pic of the probe before you fitted it ?

To Add, it appears the JUMO is M14 x1,5 but the BOSCH is M12 X 1.5 (given my use of an aging set of vernier calipers)

Thanks

I did not get them yet as there appears to be a delay with the other things I have ordered !. You need the same size as the Bosch correct ? On the invoice from Norton it says : M12 x 1.5 JUMO . There must be more than one size available , maybe you should order it from Norton ?
