Sealed Wheel Bearings for a Commando Mk3

Hi,

I'm a new member to the forum via my winter project, a 1975 Commando Mk3.

I just received dual row sealed wheel bearings (06-7688/S) from Walridge that Mike claimed were direct replacements for the OEM part for my Commando Mk3. I mic'ed them and can confirm that the bearing width is 0.628 inch, a few thou less than the unsealed OEM part. This means we can upgrade to sealed bearings with NO MACHINING, and simply make a trivial swap on both the front and rear wheels with both the single and double row bearings. These bearings are stock items; shipping to the states took a week from Ontario.

The Norton-specific site was quite useful. BTW, the bearings cited in my post are labeled as a generic 4203RS. Likely Asian; Mike at Walridge claims they are offered at Norvil as well.

Bearings are interesting things. I had some swimming pool motor pump bearings a friend gave me stashed in my supply. When I had my Triumph wheel off I thought I would just check and see if I might have the ones called for. Yep. Three of them. Triumph takes just 4 of the same number for front and rear. Then I needed some bearings for the idler pulleys on my lawn tractor/mower. They were metric with an insert to bring the bore diameter to 3/8 inch. I got 10 sealed 4203rs bearings for $20 from a place in Anaheim. The bearings were made in Hungary. I have been wanting a list of bearing numbers for my Norton but never came on it until today. I recognized the size you gave 17/40/16 as the 4203's are 17/40/12. I only need the tapered steering head bearing numbers or car application and I am ready to change all my bearings if need be. I read somewhere that inch bearings are disappearing. There are no 4203's listed on e bay right now.
