So on day 5, all part of the adventure, in Laramie Wyoming, there was a freak snow storm. He was riding in clear weather and ended up in snow. He rode through for quite a few miles but ahead was an 80 vehicle pile up on the i80 interstate HWY. The police directed him off the HWY, on the off ramp only going slow, the bike slid under him and broke the rear brake lever and hurt his leg. Some really nice truck drivers helped him get the bike up. Checked into a hotel and took a short rest. Went back out to the bike and took apart the lever. Once apart found he only sheared the bolts. So he removed the gear selector to steal bolts from that side. Met up with a guy named Nathan Cole who drove him to the Local Fastenal. There he met Jamie Perkins who got him the right bolts he needed.

Using the Hotel as a workshop, got everything sorted out.

the Norton looks like it's taking on everything well.
Looks like you are encountering some real challenges along your way.

Amazing when you figure in the weather related misfortune that your dad has encountered along the way.
Looks like both your dad, and the 961 are holding up well though.

My dad is tough and so is the Norton. Good match!!!

Not sure where your Dad is headed next, but I took a series of roads home to Vancouver from Wyoming two years ago that stands out as the best I've ever done. On arriving home I immediately marked the entire route on my maps and fully intend to do a repeat soon. Most of the roads taken were suggested by locals and are routes I would have completely missed without the local input.
The bulk of the route was through Montana and Eastern Washington then up into BC at Midway, then down highway 3 thru Oosoyos and Hope to Highway 1 and Vancouver.
Highway 3 is very nice, but I have done it a thousand times, it was the Montana and Washington stuff that was really exceptional. 70 MPH speedlimits on winding Mountain roads with virtually no traffic, little towns here and there for gas and meals, it was perfect.

I noticed at the beginning of this thread that you estimated round trip mileage of 7,000 miles.
How many miles did your dad's 961 have on the clock when he started the trip?

sounds amazing. He will be staying in Portland for a few days then with locals go north.

When he returns he'll be well on his way to 20,000 miles on the 961.
Maybe he can get there before the riding season ends this year.
It would be a great advert for Norton durability.

Well we are going to the INOA rally in North Carolina in JULY - That will add miles too. I truly think that most of the problems are being made a bigger deal than they are and every single problem is being posted on the net. And of all the bikes that are on the road, there is truly only a small percentage that have issues. Also, these are BESPOKE machines so it all adds to character.
 
Helped a guy out on a bonnie who was 320 miles from home with a broken chain. My dad said he was on reserve for some time and it was 18 miles until the next service station. Thankfully this guy had spare gas to share with my dad or he would have ran out.

Here is the pics. He is now on the outskirts on Oregon. Should reach final destination by 1pm

Man, that is some incredible load that you dad is carrying on the bike.
Any idea of the total weight of the gear?

Not sure, but to adjust the SPRING SAG with all the gear, we turned the preload dial 10 turns on the rear per side from the original 5 turns lol

That OHLINS suspension really made it easy to go from a fully loaded to nothing and handle the same.
 
My experience is that I went back to the factory setting on the rear and front . I only weigh 165 lbs (naked), and 7 full turns in from 0 (two rings showing) on the rear shocks is good for me. Again no large load. But the ride was much better over bumps , all the harshness was eliminated. I can imagine with a big load like your Dad is carrying will require more than 7 turns on the shocks. The manual states 7 full turns in on the shocks for the Sport. Are the settings different for Sport and CR/SF ? I will look. Your Dads trip looks great.
 
I read somewhere that factory settings are for 185lbs. My dad weighs less than that and we found 5 turns worked best. And I forget all the rest of the settings but we wrote them all down. Because it takes two skilled people, I'm waiting for him to get back so we can set up mine.
