SBN Silencer Weld Cracked Again

Ed, if you remember, my right SBN pipe was mounted about 1/2 higher and never had a chain rubbing issue. I did nick it on a right curve once though. Anyway, my bracket still looks clean and secure. (for now) Just wondering if the higher mounting somehow resulted in less pressure?

Hey guys! I ordered mine through Phil at Krazyhorse, of course.

Beware, however - the x-pipe is in the way of the oil sump drain plug. My current woe aside from needing a better map.

Hello Contours , Strange that your X-pipe block access to the drain plug . This is a catless X-pipe ? Both the factory Motad catted x-pipe and De-catted x-pipe had no access issues for me. I just stick the 6mm allen wrench long end between the pipes just before the X and remove the plug . Everyone who has a Motad system should check to see if they can reach sump drain plug . You have the lower mount attached and there is no oval slot to adjust back the x-pipe a little ?

Tony, it's just enough off center to interfere with putting the hex key wrench straight up. Maybe it can be coaxed to the side a bit, I'm not sure. I assumed that MCC installed it correctly, but now I'm beginning to wonder.

the X-pipe bracket should be bolted the L/H side of the under frame mounting boss. Look at my picture above .

Okay, I will take a look next time I'm near the bike. When I saw the way it was installed I assumed it had to do the sprocket clearance.

Here are a couple of pics of my SBN Dominators purchased in 2015. Note the mounting brackets are attached to a slot in a welded on a piece that is pretty well attached, like the old Commando Peashooters. The pic of them in the box shows the slot pretty well if you can see it through the plastic. This is I believe their latest design. I've had no issues with 4k miles of use on them.

The thing I do not like about the SBN pipes are the angle they are on. I understand it's to clearance but I myself don't care for the looks.

Definitely the new mounting method is superior to the old bracket welded to silencer fabrication of the old systems.
But I too don't find the steep upward pitch of the new Dominator silencer very appealing.

I personally like the looks of the upsweep peashooter type cans. The new brackets look like the sure fix for previous problems with broken rear brackets. I wish I had those instead of my (twice repaired, hope it holds up this time,) welded bracket. I'm also going to see about getting an additional x-pipe bracket made and welded on this winter. I'm always reluctant to buy something new and then start modifying it. I've got experience with motorcycles, and common sense but I'd like to think that the people who engineered the x-pipe took into consideration how much stress would be on the mounts at the head and the rear bracket. The weight of the cats is gone, but between those mounting points is a long distance to carry the weight and handle vibration and stress. When my rear bracket had broken the first time this stress caused the factory x-pipe to frame bracket to break. The second time it broke with thee new SBN x-pipe, it did not even have an under frame bracket to break, so all of the stress was transferred to where the header pipe mounts to the head ( other than what support was being carried by the left side bracket). Having that kind of stress at one end of the exhaust could cause problems that I really don't need. I'll try to prevent further grief with my own engineering. I know I'm not alone in this so if someone else has a brilliant fix (other than selling or trading my bike or putting on an exhaust that I don't want) let me know. I'm still riding my OTHER bikes. This one sure looks nice.

Looks aside, I'm curious how good they sound in person over stock.

Voodooo,
I think they sound great. They cover up the unwanted "bucket of bolts" noises but are not offensive. You'd really have to listen close to HEAR stock pipes standing close to an idling 961. These are what I'd call mellow, not loud.

The Dominator silencers have a throaty growl, and are rather loud.
It also does a nice job of covering the otherwise pronounced mechanical clanging from the engine.
By comparison, the stock factory exhaust sounds like a squirrel farting in a tin can.

Lol. Thanks.
By Dominator your mean SBN or nortons very own dominator pipes?

Yes,

SBN Dominator silencers.
I have the SBN decat X-Pipe and silencers.
The sound is excellent.
