As I was going for my weekly 60 mile coffee & back-road ride today a bloke behind me at traffic lights jumped out and asked me to pull over. Works out he has a '72 S-Type that he wants to sell. He says he bought it new, rode it for 25 years but then parked it in his shed for 25 years - apparently has hip problems.
He says the engine kicks over freely and that it has matching numbers. Based on the photos below, what do you thingk it's worth? Looks pretty good to me.
Also - anyone here interested?
If so - PM me.
Cheers
Rob

Edit: he has now told me is has 22,070 miles on it and is on 10 thou oversize. Apparently rebuilt before storage.

Someone more knowledgable than I will be along shortly…

But… I do not believe that is an S type. They weren’t made in 72, and it has too many wrong bits on like seat, side panels, headlamp and (I think) front wheel.

That’s a Roadster, get him to look for a C stamped on the head as it may be a Combat.

The front disc was linked to the Combat engine, order the front disc and it came with the Combat engine, order the Combat engine and you got the front disc. So as FE suggests get the head checked for the C stamp, it could be someone added the front disc later.

It may have started off life as an actual S, but a lot has been added from later years. The frame appears to be pre ‘71, since it doesn’t look like it has the front lower cross member. The entire front end is ‘72 onward style, including triple clamps, disk brake wheel, headlight ears, and switch gear, the seat is ‘74. Tank is steel, striped like a ‘72. Side covers, and I assume battery box, and oil tank are ‘71 and later type. The side stand bracket looks like a home made lug welded to the early frame in a place where it is not supported, so pretty sketchy. A good starter for a full strip and rebuild, but not worth huge dollars. There are much better projects out there.

Looks like a 72 Combat with up graded front brake and S-Pipes to me.
Engine and frame numbers will tell the tale.

The frame, however appears to be the early type with the crossmember under the gearbox as Interback mentioned.
An 'S' should have a central oil tank and RH removeable side panel but this has not so it appears to have a lot of later parts.
