I'd be most grateful if anyone here would be kind enough to let me know if there are any issues with fitting an S Type oil tank into a Roadster? In other words, whether it's simply a question of swapping the two or if you need to change other bits around as well.

The side panels are different and so is the battery tray, the ignition key is on the left side panel rather than on the rear air filter plate - which is integral on the s-type oil tank. The side panels are also more triangular and stick further up and forward on the frame. The oil feed unions and hoses are different. You will probably have to drill a hole in the rear top frame plate to accomodate the right side panel top mount as it cannot mount on the tank like the Roadster one. Why do you want to change the tank?

Many thanks - I was considering changing simply because I don't have a tank for the bike and there are more S Type ones around!

Hi, all copy ,but is fitting an S type oil tank is not just a matter of the tank and the tray , or are the side panels necessary ?

A 71+ roadster oil tank cover BOLTS on to the 71+ roadster oil tank. The bike would look bare with no side panels. :?:

Hi.
Dont forget that the S type oil tank has another rear mudguard.
You can leave the 1971 one but you will see free the notch that needs to fit the oil feed.

Thanks for the helpful info - I haven't got a rear mudguard either, so I'll make sure the one I buy is for an S Type!

There are 2 types of rear mudguards. Pretty sure the very early ones mount with a bracket between the shock top bolts like mine and the other the guard mounts on a plate attached to the rear large tube web. The mounting holes are in different places and one has a flat spot and the other not. Here's a picture of both of them. I've seen both brackets available, but the mudguards, good luck. Andover may have one.

And here's compared to the 71 which I put on mine after drilling the mounting holes, my original (in blue) was pretty damaged. The other one with the flat spot has been sold.

The 2 S type are also more of a C section and the 71 a D section so it's got a bit of a flat spot on the outside curve.

Many thanks for the helpful photos! It would be really helpful if there was a list of all the S Type parts that were different from the Roadster & Fastbacks. I've got about eight different official 750/850 parts books, and none of them even mention the S Type. :(

Good luck figuring out that S supplement. There's still some stuff missing or hard to figure. But it's a good start. Notice the supplement has page numbers to reference the part numbers, that helps some. PM me if you need help or recommendations, I've got about everything on the S which is the same as the 70 Roadster except for the pipes. Like I've never seen a parts diagram of the oil tank/battery tray.

Many thanks for the kind offer of help - it's much appreciated (and needed!). :)
