Apologies if this has been discussed before but are the mufflers used on the high level S models the same as the Roadster mufflers? I have a set of standard Roadster Mufflers and for fun I'd like to fit the high level S pipes on left side of the bike. Thanks in advance.

They are different: S Mufflers have a single mounting boss, and threaded bosses for heat shields.

The “S” type high level exhaust was prone to fractures. Likely why Norton only used it for 16 months before changing to low level roadster type.

Having had three breakages on my s type exhausts i have to agree with ILL8ED ,i had one new pipe and another welded up twice until i discovered why,
when you tighten up the left one it forces it down on to the primary case and also the long full nut of the rear iso, I reduced the length of this nut by half to give me about 5mm clearance and i slide a 6mm packer between pipe and the top of the primary when i tighten the exhaust , then slide packer out ,since then no problems. Colin

I fully agree - you cannot force this exhaust system into place - it has to be stress and interference free upon assembly. I typically tweek the bends on the header pipes to achieve this. It by no means makes this system failure free, but it does increase it's longevity to "workable".

Something to keep in mind is that the header pipes may come into contact with the front mudguard on compression of the front forks. This particularly applies if using the large front guard for the 4.10 tyre ,also may depend on frame and triple clamp year/ model combination .

Do the SS type exhausts ( high pipe on both sides) suffer similar problems?

Regarding the front guard touching the header , I have a skinny norvil front fender and under full compression it does touch but i have never felt it whilst riding

I also had 3 left broken headers. If you do not tighten the muffler clamps the system can "work". My mufflers are "slip on" and they move forward and back when accelerating etc.
I made a solution to fix the front heat shields only to the headerd and not to the mufflers on the rear end of the shields. Photos will follow.
