Hi, I am looking for a contact and/or information on author Roy Bacon. I couldn't find any internet information on him.

thanks for the info, any ideas on Niton Publishing contacts?

I wrote direct to Roy some years back, via Niton Publishing. In the IoM I recall (?).
He replied with quite a helpful letter.
I gathered he had a team working for him ?, but if it was just him he sure got around. !

I bought a number of Roy Bacon books over the years I've had my Norton. IMO they are full of generalizations and detail inaccuracies. I would not use them as a source for a restoration.

what do you use?

Ha ha I'm not all knowing -- My interest started in 1971 or so and I'm no expert. I was comparing what I knew at the time from the factory literature, magazine road tests, and owning a new '72 combat to some of the statements in his Norton Twins book. Found the same in his AJS/Matchless Post-War models book.

I'd suggest having a talk with Dyno Dave at one of the INOA rallies sometime for some factual info.

I also bought a new 750 combat Roadster, was there and agree with you regarding Roy Bacon's publications. Good for general information yet several inaccuracies. That said, I'm not sure anyone judging a concourse can really know what was factory original in all respects and it shows we should not get too hung up on it. Then again I'm not a collector. Have enjoyed riding Commandos and other Norton models for 44 years.

I would largely disagree with this statement. I suspect i have every Roy Bacon book or booklet published on Nortons, and in my view they are an excellent starting point for restoring any Norton. They have a considerable number of period and detail pics of Nortons, there is simply no substitute for this info. We are NOT talking brochure pics here, which were often (heavily) airbrushed - and details washed over or washed out !

HOWEVER, something that came to light during his publishing of these is that he relied entirely on factory published data and details - and as supplied to the UK market. He advised that export market models often differed from the UK models, and he often had no details of these. I have a model supplied only to Australia, and in print it was long said this model didn't exist !

What do you know of Fastback badges?

Why not ask that question here.
There have been several previous discussions on that here, and I followed this, from mere curiousity.
Including several that made their own versions even...

In my view, the Norton expertise here now mostly far exceeds anything published in most books - as any book can only cover a fraction of this subject. And many here have photographic memories it seems, and an answer is sure to be forthcoming on anything Commando* ever thrown up in the way of discussion. Just be sure to have your chaff separator switched on first...

*other earlier models may be a little more problematic, as knowing precise details often involves owning that particular model, and being able to eyeball/measure same. Some knowing owners also seem to have drifted away from forum life too, maybe it was all too old hat ?

One inconsistency that comes to mind with Bacon's Norton Twin Restoration as far as historic serial number for the last 750. He stated 230935 was the last one, but doesn't mention anything about the 235xxx series that many of us have seen. Not necessarily inaccurate as who knows what the factory did on these. At least incomplete information. It should have been mentioned in the text.

The '235' series were likely not mentioned by RB because he may have been unaware of their existence because they may not have even been listed in the factory records he would have had access to. As I was informed by the NOC some years ago, that their: ".......records become non-existant after mid 1972.......".

Just an example that came to mind. My comment is only meant to slow down those that preach correctness to factory original, concourse, sighting publications as the bible. Bacon's contribution is enormous.
