I have now completed the conversion of my MK111 to a left foot brake, using a pre 75 l/h brake lever, cable and master cylinder to activate the rear disc. All working well and I still have the gear lever still on the left, which is not as bizarre as it seems, due to me having a partially disabled right leg.
I can still do slightly clumsy r/h gear changes on my other machines and was contemplating having the same on the Commando.
In my search on this site, I see that I need the inner and outer gearbox cover, plus a few other bits are required to do this.
I have been offered a complete earlier type gear box, marked M31389, possibly a Matchless?
My question is, would this earlier gearbox contain all the essential ingredients that I require for the r/h conversion, on a later Mk111 gearbox?
Thanks in advance for any learned responses.

One thing to keep in mind is the outer cover of any commando has the clutch cable enter in different position as say a dominator or a matchless
Also the inner cover has a different kickstart return spring arrangement
It may be better to buy an inner and outer pre MK3 complete covers
Hope this helps

You'll need to plug up the unused shift shaft hole on the inner primary cover.

Yes, just inner & outer pre-MkIII cover w/ shifter and you'll be fine.

MAYBE you could also just plug the MkIII inner cover's inner hole? Not positive, I changed both...

The inner gearbox cover is also different in the way that the hole where the gear ratchet plate assembly rotates has a different orientation ...............so the best is to find pre mk3 inner/outer gearbox assy.

Very good to know. It has been more than 10 years, so I didn't recall...

I'll be glad to swap parts to make my 73 a right break left shift if they are direct fit i wouldn't care if shift pattern is different

Converting a pre-Mk3 to left foot gearchange although not impossible given enough time and money but would be far from a direct fit.

Gene, the gearbox mod itself is a simple "bolt on" change of the inner cover, outer cover & their internal components. However, you will have to modify your primary covers for the shift cross over shaft. The Mk III primary covers have holes/bushings & oil seals for this shaft. See

Mk III Inner gearbox cover

Mk III outer gearbox cover

You'll need items #1 thru #13 & #34 linked below

Mk III shift cross over hardware

You will also need items #9 & #10 linked below. Also need to modify both primary covers to mount the needed bushings & oil seals.

Mk III outer primary cover hardware needed

Best case would be to swap inner & outer gearbox covers & hardware with someone who wants to convert a Mk III to right side shift. Be sure to also get the shifter cross over shaft.

Potential issue is interference of the steel disc on your inner primary cover with the cross over shaft.

The pre-Mk3 gearbox shell would also have to be replaced with a Mk3 case or the quadrant boss machined down (and shorter Mk3 quadrant fitted). The cross-shaft also needs a hole where the inner primary support stud is on the-pre Mk3 cradle.

Fitting Mk3 primary cases to a pre-Mk3 would also not be a straightforward job either.

Besides, why do you want to shift on the wrong side? :D

Thank you for parts list. I would do it as a trade of parts, as I suggested, with another member, but not willing to purchase the parts separately. Boring the inner and outer primary is easy I have big grey monster that LOVES to make holes(Bridgeport)

With a Bridgeport [I love them] it will be an easy conversion. I have my Mk III gearbox apart. If needed, I can supply length of cam plate axle and reduced height of the boss on the case for that axle. Another job for the Bridgeport.

That's what I love about this forum, everybody is so willing to help. I have enough projects right now shouldn't start another one. Sooner or later it's gonna be riding weather!!!!
