Just installed a RGM fold up kicker smashing bit of kit well worth the money, clears them silencers a treat BUT it has a annoying habit of unfolding at certain revs/vibes? i've tightened up as much as poss but it still likes to unfold,so i'm looking for a solution(some kind of clip/rubber band/magnate)any ideas most welcome...............Andy......PS I remember reading someone else had the same problem but can't find the thread.

Sorry no solution to floppy kickstart problem but any chance of posting a picture, haven't seen a folding Commando one in the flesh yet.

There is, I think, an indexing spring which holds the lever in the both the folded and extended positions?

Can you bend the ends of the spring so it will retain the lever in the folded position more securely?

Hi arc,

I also got the same fold up kicker for my 75 MK3.

I can get the new kicker on the splines but the bolt will not catch the threads. I did a bit of filing to remove some chrome but I still can't get the bolt to catch.

Did you have any issues with this? Also on the MK3 the kicker does not fold flat, it hits the rear brake master cylinder, it folds 75% of the way.

Sorry if this is a hijack of a thread, not my intention, just looking for some info. :D

If it hasn't got the plate spring like the T160 then it should have a ball detent in the lever between the hinge lugs. Can you post a photo?

The kicker has indent washers which i've tried to adjust? but to no avail.Got a couple of pics on the bike but none of it off and stripped to component parts,i'll try to get some soon!............

Just fitted one to mine after my expensively rechromed original kept creeping off the splines

You'd like to think it would have positive detents for the folded position, but....yet another example of us Brits nearly getting it right

Still better than the old ankle-grinder though.

Incidentally... it was a pain to fit, as there's no clearance between the clamp and the gearbox outer cover - I almost gave up at one point.

It's a definite improvement over the original, but definitely room for er...improvement.

The photo of the lever on the RGM website shows it is fitted with what appears to be a spring similar to that on the original T160 version.

Ah ah,that T160 spring arrangement looks to be the answer although something like that should come with the RGM kicker to stop the unfolding problem.I will see if i can make up something along those lines. Thanks to LAB for posting pics..............................Andy

The RGM website photo shows what appears to be a similar spring arrangement on their lever, so they must have changed the design for some reason?

Yes LAB you're right i expect it's down to cost? but they should remove the pic from the catalogue if it not the same as they are selling, mind you if they do'nt address the unfolding probs they wo'nt sell many anyway! I might give them a ring and see what they have to say.........................................Andy

Have you told RGM ?

I would have thought there should be a 6mm detent ball and spring fitted in the lever. If not and I know you shouldn't have to, but it's not too difficult to fit one.

Another solution might be to fit a brass shim washer in between one of the hinge faces to provide a bit more friction when the hinge bolt is tightened up.

On my own the prototype, I use a belleville washer and a detent ball and have no problems what so ever.

Would a wave/spring washer work too? I believe that's what's on the stock lever. At least that's what I used.

I have had mine for 10 years now and has never unfolded but the bolt on the folding part has to be retighten every so often (about once a month and only a light nip up) but the lever stays put when folded away, the bolt on the spline has never come loose like the old stock kicker did, was always tightening that one up.

I bought one recently for a project, haven't tried kicking it yet. It's kicking position is way away from the bike which seems awkward. Any opinions on this? I am thinking of heating and bending to make it closer to the bike but the footpegs and mufflers have not been constructed yet.

I'd leave it as is
One of the benefits of the rgm Kickstarter is it clears everything (usually)
