Can the sump filter on a Mk3 be unscrewed and taken out to access the sump?

I'd rather you didn't ask why,,, but you will,

I helicoiled the stripped sump drain plug and I think the break off piece of the heli coil went inside.
I grabed the break off piece with a pair of pointy nose pliers and pulled out, it broke off but I can't find it.
It wasn't in the pliers, it could have been knocked out of the pliers when it gave way and the pliers dragged against the threaded hole, OR, it flicked off inside the cases.
If the sump filter can come out it has a hole big enough to poke a borrowed camera in and look around.

it'll come right out.
It's a big AF like 1-1/2 or something but it will unscrew.
Once out you could dismantle it and clean the strainer, etc.
Maybe solder the wire retainer in place too, I read some posts about that on this site.
Best of luck.

Heicoils are usually stainless steel, however the type I have are magnetic-so you may be able to fish the piece out with a magnet?

Thanks, I'll let you know.

No it's stainless, I checked.

So are mine-but they are still magnetic. Are you saying your ones do not stick to a magnet?

Graeme,

That's a bummer losing that piece of heli coil in there. I have my cases apart at the moment, and looking at the area where the pick up filter resides. You may find it hard to gain access to the rest of the crankcase from this area. Because the large pick up bung is kind of heavily shielded. I presume this is to minimise aerated oil from the spinning crank? But the good news is this pick up filter as fitted to latter model and very early will avoid the piece of helicoil getting drawn up into the oil pump. Regarding the previous post on soldering the circlip, I agree with this. I noticed my circlip was half out when I pulled the engine apart.

Good luck from Sydney mate!

I remove and clean the sump filter every oil change... am I in the minority on that?

You may be in the minority but I would say the smart minority. What is in that sump filter is a good indication of what is happening in the motor. I would not solder the ring in as then you can't remove and clean the screen, what I do is pick up a regular snap ring to replace the wire clip. They don't come out until you want them to. Jim

I clean mine every oil change. Everything is washed gently in clean solvent in a white dish so that I can perform a full examination. It's such a nice feeling if there are no shiny flakes of stellite or cam lobe ! :D

LAB, you are correct, it is mildly magnetic with a descent magnet. The magnet I tried last night was a weak magnet, but with a better magnet it does stick.
Thanks, that gives me an opportunity to go fishing.

Thanks Richard, it is hard to get a small camera around the filter and past the crank to the drain plug area to see.

You may also be able to flush it out by pouring petrol or paraffin/kerosene into the sump through the Mk3 ignition timing plug aperture (provided that the piece is actually in there, and not hiding elsewhere)?

Had the same problem a while back. My solution was to flush out the crankcase and it worked fine. Fit about 3 foot of hose to a funnel. Put a catch pan under the motor. Keep the small magnetic drain screw in. Remove the small big sump nut and poke the end of the hose with some rag tied around the end up into the case and hold it there. Get a mate to pour diesel or kerosine into the funnel. Get him to shake the bike around and then pull the hose out and let the fluid wash out. Inspect the pan, remove the magnetic drain screw and inspect for the missing helicoil end. Repeat until its found.

Jim, a snap ring in place of the stock clip?

Great idea, can I ask what is the size to search for and is this available at a Lowes, or find it where?

Thanks!

Last time I got some I went to the local auto parts store with the sump plug and a pair of snap ring pliers and they brought out their assortment.
I found what fit and emptied the case so I still have some left. Unfortunately I do not know what number they were as it has been several years. I do know it was a standard size. Jim

This is why I love this forum, I just recieved my new sump socket wrench and will be taking mine out, this week end. Now i can go to auto zone and get a snap ring and end up much better off than when i started. thanks guys, Cj

Got it on the first try,
A piece of fridge door gasket magnet poked in from the sump filter and wiggled around.

And I learnt about cleaning the sump filter and replacing the clip.

Thank you all again.
