Remapping / Hard cold start

I purchased the bike with the DS exhaust, which sounds wonderful. When the bike is cold, it takes at least 5 attempts to start, first try doesn't even kick, second try some sputtering, third and fourth is a start with stalling. It seems I have to keep it at two grand for a minute till it warms up. Is this normal? I figured with fuel injection, it would start, idle a little high on its own and then go down to 1200. The dealer said there is no remapping and they were not supplied with software to do so, yet I've read the Brits bring their bikes for remapping. Its an annoyance but not a major one.

In the UK there is remapping done when the silencers are changed so looks like your dealer needs to get more info from UK.

From what I have been able to research the re-maps have been done to the older fuel injection systems not the latest closed loop systems as Britfan and I have. I pump my throttle once then start the bike, I raised my idle per the shop manual and it helped with both the starting and running! The bikes are very lean as delivered and the optional pipes of course do contribute to the problem!

5 attempts to start the bike is definitely not normal! Pump it once or twice then use the throttle for a few seconds, it should then idle. It will start and run better with mileage also, how much do you have!

You can adjust your idle with a 1.5 mm allen wrench, it takes about 10 seconds!

Thanks BP. I didn't want to pump a fuel injection system simply because it goes against the grain of any cars I've had that were EFI. I'm idling at 1200 warm. It seems good when warm but I wish it were a little higher cold. What should I raise it to?

I agree that it goes against everything we were taught to not touch the throttle when starting fuel injected vehicles. But these Nortons do not behave like other fuel injected vehicles which start and idle perfectly from 20-120 degrees F.

I raised my idle up to 1400 R{M but after a ride or 2 it went back down to 1100-1200 almost as if the ECU was controlling it, which the shop manual assures me is not the case??? Weird! These bikes do not have a perfect steady idle like the jap bikes do so at times it is hard to tell. After a good hard run mine will idle differently then when I just put around town and temp makes a differance also which is not the case with most FI bikes!

Keep us informed!

Yea...I love the idle of the parallel twins. Got my Bonnie idling at around 9K. I noticed after a harder ride (kept it btw 4 and 5k) it idled faster than a round town ride.

When I got my Sport, it had the stock pipes. It also took several tries to start, and it wouldn't idle without stalling, until it had run for several minutes. I had to keep my hand on the throttle all the time. Occasionally, it would even stall when fully warmed up which was really annoying in heavy traffic.

At the 500 mile service, I had new mufflers installed (the model that looks like stock, but with a bigger opening.) The dealer also installed a re-map that came with the pipes. Now, the bike does start a little more easily, but it usually splutters at least once. It doesn't stall at all when it's warm and it idles about 1200 when fully warm. ( Ihave about 1000 miles on the bike now)

When did you get your pipe and re-map. Back in February I heard it would be a while before Norton Canada offered these !

PS. Following your posts it looks like mid or late June??

Actually, upon reinspection of the owners manual, it says to hold the throttle partially open while starting. t
That is so odd for an EFI. Seems to work ok. I also hold it at 1800 RPM for 20-30 seconds or so. And for once in my life, I thought I was pretty thorough with an owners manual. Guess not.

I ordered my mufflers and remap in May, but I didn't get them installed till June because of the rainy spring here.
