Red Data Plate on Frame - Read from bottom up or top down?

I'm ready to re-nail the red certification plate back on the front of the frame (after having the frame powder coated). But which way is it supposed go on a '74 Commando?!
Mine was reading from bottom to top when I removed it, but it looks unnatural to me. Did the factory follow any kind of convention?
I don't want to get it upside down and be embarrased at the Concouse d'Elegance!

My vote is for upwards, that's how the plate is on my 850 MkIII, the number stamped on the frame itself reads downwards.
 
Whilst you are doing that, make sure you get some "hammer-drive screws," part number: 061287.

They have a knurled shaft, and all you do is tap them in, they don't come back out! I just thought that I would mention it.....as opposed to ordinary rivets (screws). The ones I got from Norvil are a nice gold/brass colour too..........maybe they all are?
 
Trick is to put a small washer under the rivet head, then if you ever want to remove the plate again you can gring the heads off the rivets without knackering the plate.

Mine is also attached with numbers going upwards.

Although my replacement serial number plate is different than the original that came with the bike. I just had my frame powdercoated and needed a new plate. The new one I bought has no space for the date of manufacture. It has a place for the serial number and a place for the horsepower (PS) DIN. The original never had that. Weight ratings on new one are in kg while the original is lbs.

What is up with that anyway?
 
There were different types for different countries, Does Andover Norton stamp the numbers on the new ones or do you have to do it yourself? Or do you guys know where I could have a new one made up? I just hate to put that ugly old one back on, I have just powder coated the frame and am ready to start putting it all back together. Thanks guys, Chuck.
 
I noticed Old Britts sells a plate p/n 06-3247. There is a good photo of it on their website.

I bought mine from Walridge Motors up here in Canada for $23 and I stamped it myself. Mine was bought in Canada for a Canadian bike which is why weight might be in kg.

Since there was no actual designated space for date of manufacture on the replacement, I just stamed the date in the upper right corner where my old one was on the original plate.

I would have liked to get the same as the one that was original but who really cares. You can't see the thing with the instruments, cables and yokes in the way anyway.
 
I ordered a new plate from Norvil a few years ago. I sent a PHOTOCOPY of the bike's title. Within a couple weeks I had my new ID plate with VIN stamped on it.
