I know a few people rave about them for working on their bike(s). Useful for 'shocking' stubborn nuts off etc.

What do you use, and what would you recommend (without spending a fortune)?

I got a cordless DeWalt on a deal from screwfix.

I think this one, but didn't pay anything like this money. I needed the impact driver, but not the drill, but actually appreciate the drill much more, way better than the one I had.

Both are good, but I haven't worked them hard. (Can't even remember what I needed the impact driver for?! Something on the car I think)

It's very good as a drill. It's fine for driving wood screws. It's fine for quickly running nuts and bolts in and out. It is not worth a crap as an impact. On 10 I suspect that it is doing maybe 3 lf lbs. On drill, it will hurt you if trying to loosen or tighten a nut, so it has power, but the clutch is not good.

I've never found anything it won't loosen - it does 450 ft lb. I used an air impact until I kept coming across things it would not loosen and someone insisted that this would do the job - it does and it's all about the impact. No twisting your arm.

Bonz, are you referring to a 1/2” drive “Rattle gun” or an impact screwdriver?
 
Sorry Cliff, yes indeed, a 1/2" drive rattle gun.

Also, I figure it doesn't need to be cordless either, given my needs, so corded should save a few quid ;)

Sorry Bonz, I missed your reply. Personally I would still go for a cordless, as you never know where you will need it, and as they all appear to be made in the PRC, you may as well look out for one in Aldi or Lidl, which will come with a 3 year guarantee and at a good price.
 
How about one that’s made in China. Oh hang on they’re all made in China
