Racing Update

John,

I think it'll be interesting getting the fueling dialed in on the new 2 into 1 system.
Do you have anyone helping you on this with new maps?

Just came back from UK and a visit to the Norton factory. There were some offers to possibly allow us access to the ECU to do our own maps. I promised to keep all new maps we might produce as Norton property. So if this does happen I will not be able to share the maps.

We will see. Currently, we plan to send the ECU to get current upgrades (Richard says it is a new operating system that is being loaded, and not a new map)

John, that looks cock on to me !

Thanks Nigel

Sorry we could not get together at Donington Park. I had a great time. I saw more Manxs in one day than I have seen in my entire life. Touring the paddock after racing was a great deal of fun. It was like walking through a AHRMA paddock (as far as friendliness) but everybody spoke with a British accent LOL

Thanks for the response.

Just to beat this topic to death...

If you decide to market a street version of the 2 into 1 exhaust, and develop a suitable new EFI map for it, will Norton make the applicable map available for the buyer to have installed by a dealer?

Picture of the new 2 into 1 system after polish. This system currently only fits the racing 961 and has attachments to our in house rear sets. I guess we could make additional mounts to have this system mount to standard frame components. I am hesitant because there seems to be some aftermarket 2 into 1 systems starting to come on the market. Some feedback from the Access Norton 961 community would be nice

Ok, for the big news. I have shared garage space at the races with a Ducati team out of Fort Lauderdale. The owner of the team is really fast, number 1 plate in several classes. And, he happens to be a really nice guy, who is a gun aficionado. Many of you know that my machine shop makes firearms (it is about 30% of our revenues +$4 million a year in firearms) So a visit was made to my shop to look at firearm products. The conversation ended up going to the 961 and our problems with maps, and my concern with the new exhaust and getting the bike running better.

I was told that he could hack into the ECU and put a system in that could be used to generate our own maps. I said "How long will this take". He said "About 3 days" So he took my street 961 to Fort Lauderdale. Three days later we have a system that is running great. A new system and harness is being sent up to put on the race 961. We have played with several other items beside the new exhaust. Right now, the street bike with SB cat delete exhaust is showing a 15% increase in horsepower, over the base dyno reading when it arrived. It is running much smoother (the street bike has the 77 map on it)

I will have more details and info after we hook up the system on the race bike and play with it on the dyno.

Another update

The race bike is currently in Ashville, North Carolina. I met a tuner who is really sharp, and he has joined the race team.

One of things he did was work on the Ohlin suspension. Ohlin is actually located in Hendersonville, North Carolina, about 10 miles south of Asheville. The tuner took the front and rear suspension components to a shop in Hendersonville that had a Ohlin suspension dyno (yes, a suspension dyno) Several components were changed and the system was dialed in for racing. I have not had it on the track yet (Utah race is Labor Day weekend, followed the next week at Talladega)

I will update this after the race, and have more details on what was done on the suspension

John your exhaust system is very nice.

FWIW... I would suggest not making one to fit to the stock frame as you'll surely have to re-design the entire rear portion, and lose the nice overall lines in the process.

Market the rear sets, and some for to up use, and an exhaust that suits the rear sets.

Of course, all of this wonderful advice is from a none 961 owner !

Very interesting ECU things going on over there too...!

PPS -- My dads new aluminum tank is a lot lighter than the stock one if you want to shed pounds..
Do you know the weight of the stock vs the aluminum tank?

This should definitely solve the problems of chain and ground clearances. I am very surprised that the Zard system have their 2in1 exhaust on the right side, where there still might exist the problem with chain clearance...

The Zard 2-into-1 system will have to move further from the bike's centerline to avoid drive chain interference on the right side.
This will effect cornering clearance on the right side.
Routing the exhaust to the left side will allow John's 2-into-1 system to more closely hug the frame closer to the bike's centerline.
This should provide superior cornering clearance.

Zard exhausts are a well finished product though, so I guess you can't go wrong either way.

My 2 cents anyway.

We did not have a viable option for a right side pipe. The new frames for the rear sets are moved closer to the bike frame, and the right mount has to be milled on the back side for chain clearance. And, all of this work is being done by a performance shop in Asheville, North Carolina by a couple of very talented guys.

We are currently discussing making a set for my street 961. This would prototype a unit that would fit without the modifcations we have done for rear sets and might be available for short production runs if we see a market

I will summarize some of what exists in this threads as far as clearance. The first thing to hit the ground was the Motad shorty's (and I believe any other stock exhaust would have had clearance problems) The next obstacle to getting the bike over was the foot pegs. We have solved that problem with a redesigned set of rear sets

I doubt I would ever get the lean angles on the street that I get on the track, I have soft slicks on the bike which allows a much more acute lean angle. So I do not know if the rear sets are needed for street use. But the exhaust, 2 into 1 system may have a market for performance, with the additional factor of better ground and chain clearance.

Stay tuned

John

Hello John , This is great news. A 15 % increase in HP would be a wonderful milestone. 80 Horses at the rear wheel should give you that extra push you want at the track !

John,

If you do produce a small production run of the 2-into-1 exhaust:

Will the megaphone have silencing material inside to reduce noise?
Will the under engine pipe allow easy access to the engine sump plug? My SBN X-pipe is a nightmare for oil changes.

John,

Anything new concerning the 2-into-1 exhaust?

John,

Getting ready for final race at Barber this weekend, so I am a bit busy. But, I will have a year end update after Barber. We have several things we may offer for 961 owners. 2 into 1 exhaust fitted for stock bikes with oil change access and new drain plug. We have also successfully installed an after market tuner that automatically sets fuel, and reads new lamda sensors. Also some suspension goodies and rear sets

More info to come

John,

That is fantastic news.
Can't wait to hear the details.

Good luck at Barber.

John, I would like to look you up at Barber this weekend. I'll be the Norton rider on the HD Road Glide. My 961 will be sitting in Indiana. I wouldn't consider trucking a motorcycle anywhere and right now that's the only way my Norton is going to get to Alabama. I hope you do well and will be rooting for you. I really want to check out what you've done to your machine. Good luck!
