not sure if its cheating, but you can elongate the pickup sensor mounting holes and advance your timing a little..

Richard,

did you ever do a weight comparison between the stock 961 front an rear laced wheels and their BST carbon fiber alternatives?
It would be interesting to know the difference in weight.

I will weigh my bike but my dad weighed his SF and its:
2013 SF FULL OF GAS AND OIL = 504 LBS

I`ll weigh mine this weekend.

Roughly 35 lbs. of fluids. So much for the claimed 415 lbs. dry weight.

MAYBE 415 IS THE SE DRY. They did have SE`s first. I`ll find out this weekend.

I have gone through two sets of boots, and have ground the ends off the stock pegs. The position of the pegs must be altered

So, we have designed a new set of billet rear sets. Pushes the peg location 1 1/2 inch inboard on both sides. And, we have moved the peg back 7 inches. The sitting position with the clip-ons is absolutely fabulous. I do not think they would be comfortable with a SF configuration. We have plans to design in a silencer support for stock application

Pictures are first bolt on after mill work, so they are rough. We are working on the rear master cylinder location now

Impressive prototype. Can't wait to see the finished product. There might be quite a few people interested in these if you were to work out all the bugs and start production and maybe offer some different options. I know I'd take a look. Great job.

Cools stuff.
Our old Commandos have Z plates
Alloy plates sure reinforce the Norton family resemblance of the 961.

Wicked nice, John! This is a work of art.

The only reason I would not be the first in line to grab a set is that I am liking the more upright position of my Sport. The clip-ons on my Daytona cause me so much pain in the wrists and hands that I can barely stand a ride exceeding 90 miles. :|

Hi John, definitely count me in as interested. The problem is that the Motad pipes are limiting ground clearance and not the foot pegs. With the SBN pipes ground clearance improves...

Update: When we started modifying the bike for ground clearance issues, the first part that hit the ground was the Motad shorty mufflers. We fixed this by cutting back the decatt X-pipe and installing a couple of Cone cans.

I am working with a new mechanic that thinks we can improve performance with a new 2 into 1 exhaust that will not have clearance problems, and will connect to the new rear set plates we have made (version 2 of the rear set plates is now being machined)

So here are some pics of the beginning of the fabrication. More pics when the job is done

John ,

I have been following your results on the AHMRA site but I can't get any lap or race times . Could you give us some of your lap times and a comparison of the race leaders times.

Regards Jimmy

John,

Will the new exhaust be a 2 into 1 system with the megaphone exiting on the left hand side?

Comparisons are difficult right now. There are about 5 bikes in the class that are not correct according to AHRMA rules (cheater bikes) These bikes have been protested by another rider and should be DQ'ed for the next race. These cheater bikes are running about 15 to 20 second faster lap times than me.

The legal bikes with fast riders are doing 4 to 9 second faster lap times.

I am a rookie rider this year, and still learning. The legal bikes at the beginning of the year were 20 to 30 seconds faster. I have improved enough to cut the difference down.

I am competing against 650 SV Suzuki's. They are overhead cam short stroke, high RPM motors. I can brake and corner with them, but as soon as we hit the straightaway after an apex, they jump 10 to 20 yards out in front of me. They develop their HP quicker than the long stoke. more torque motor in the Norton

We are trying to get a little more legal HP out of the 961, and doing some legal work on taking weight off the bike.

And of course, I would like to continue to be a more competitive rider.

BT

Yes, it will be a 2 into 1 exhaust that will exit left side. We just redesigned the rear set assembly. The rear set bracket on the left side will also be the mount point for the exhaust. We are working on rear set mount points for stock or aftermarket exhaust, and bi-posto peg mounts

Will have pictures of this later

John,

Thank you for replying to my post.

That's the info I was kinda looking for, but comparisons on different race tracks will only be apparent next year at second time of asking. Is there an app that you can get that will give practice and race times from Ahmra?

You must be having the time of your life traveling round the country racing and working on upgrades for the bike, best of good fortune to you and if you could give us some lap times? it keeps it interesting for us on the sidelines.

Jimmy

Well, I think you're on to something with this 2:1 system.

To my eye, the exhausts on the 961 are to low, and it seems this is dictated by having to clear the chain on the RHS.

So, making a 2:1 system that exists on the LHS will allow the pipe a much better line. And, of course, the lack of any pipe on the RHS will clean that side up a lot too.

So all in all, I'd suggest you gear up for making more than one set as I predict there'll be a demand for such a system based on its aesthetic benefit alone!

Keep the pics coming...

I agree.

That is the beauty of dedication in racing, you can SOMETIMES take advantage of that dedication and hard work, to the point that it starts to become a small subsidy to the otherwise 100% expense endeavor. If you are very clever, industrious, and have good marketing skills & venues (such as this forum), it can pay off a bit more.

An owner in New Zealand had a 2 into 1 system fabricated for his bike a few years ago. Same company fabricated the megaphones for my Dominator.

The images of the Commando are before the system was polished.

IMHO he missed the opportunity to fabricate a new frame member and raise up the overall height of the exhaust and angle of the silencer whilst doing this.

Your set up looks stunning BTW!
