Racing Update

I know I have neglected regular updates on the racing, but the shop is experiencing a 50% increase in business and it has kept me hopping.

But, I want to share something we are getting ready to do:

The last three tracks we have been on have had long straightaways. I am tapped out in 5th gear before I get 1/3 down the straightaways. Top speed of about 128 MPH.

We have just scanned and modeled the countershaft sprocket. We have ordered the tooling to cut the chain teeth, and have the tooling for cutting the internal spline.

I am making a one tooth up sprocket for the bike to try a get a little more speed on the top end. At the same time we are making a one tooth down sprocket for shorter track and street application. The one tooth down will cut top speed, but will make the bike faster from stop light to stop light.

I am thinking about making a short run of the one tooth down sprocket. Before I decide on the quantity, I thought I would see how much interest there was from this group in acquiring a one tooth down countershaft sproket

John
Hi John
How are your plans going for the one tooth down sprocket? I am still very interested.

Sprockets are going to heat treat this week. I want to test them once they are back.

I talked to Matt at CNW about handling the sales, and he has agreed to stock the sprockets.

I will talk to Richard about a manual for changing the sprocket

Do not have a price yet, but my plans are to make them very affordable

Racing Update: Circuit moved to California for the last two weeks. Racing at Willow Springs and Sonoma (old Sears Point)

Bike performed great, no mechanical issues. I will post some pictures when I get a spare minute.

I finished one race at Willow Springs with an 8th place finish. Previous best was 17th. One race I did not finish. I was passing two Thruxtons on the outside of a big right hand corner. Unfortunately, someone had gone off the track and had littered the outside line with a bunch of gravel. By the time I saw the gravel it was too late. I had to stand the bike up, and proceeded on a 100 MPH off road journey into the desert. I stopped about 150 yards out in the desert, but was able to stop the bike without going down. I did need to change my underwear after the incident. I also believe the 961 needs more suspension travel if it is to be used as a desert racer. LOL

Sonoma was a good outing. Two races completed with a 4th place finish in both races. Sonoma was a technical track, and the twin Brembo's really had a workout

John,

Great.
It sounds like you're really getting seriously into it on the track.
Nice to hear the 961 has had no issues.
If it can take that kind of pounding, then it has passed a significant torture test.
I hope to see you and the other Nortons in New Jersey when the circus swings up to the northeast.

If you keep this up, we'll have to start a fan club for you.

Cheers

They are done

Testing starts tomorrow

From left to right: One tooth down, Stock, One tooth up

Richard: PM me your address so I can send you a test set for writing the manual

That picture is worthy of being hung at the Norton Factory . Great looking sprockets by the way !

Update on Countershaft Sprockets

Dave and Richard sent me a sprocket off a 2013 model that they acquired. We scanned and reversed engineered the sprocket from this model. We made inspection go / no go gauges for the internal spline based on the scan and inspection of the spline. When we went to install the new sprockets for testing, they would not fit on the 2015 model. The under pin measurements of the spline were different by about .010. We are not sure what Norton changed as to fit of this spline.

Dave is at the Norton factory this last week, and will attempt to find out what the change is, and when it happened.

So anyway we are in process of making a new set of sprockets. In the future, we will have sprockets for both splines we have found on the bikes, and hopefully a time (or VIN) when Norton changed the spline configuration

More info to come but we have learned that Norton now has full control of the trans and sprockets whereas they did not in the past. So 2013 and prior models may (or may not) have an issue with replacing sprockets. Time will tell I guess as John has found a 2013 sprocket does not fit a 2015. We still need to get to the bottom of this >> and we will

Perhaps I will make a manual to show how to measure for this to make sure (or better your chances) of getting the correct sprocket for you bike.

Don't worry, we'll figure it out.

Actually, we should have a separate topic for the sprocket...
I just got a new front sprocket fixed to my 2012 CR 961, thus it is possible to get sprockets for pre-2013 bikes.
