A new season and a new bike.

The first race with the BHR at Mallory park was this weekend and it was the first time out with the ES2.

I had only done a few laps on it at a practice day a couple of weeks before and it was a bit of a pig that day. The engine had decided that the oil was better off on me rather than inside, and in the second session it started to miss fire which brought me in early to change the plug, I went back out for half a lap when it stopped for good.

The bike felt ok though and I had time to sort things for this weekend. The oil leaks were stopped with a quick rebuild and removing some extra breathers that had been fitted by the engines previous owners, these were stopping the one way breather from working. The cause of the engine stopping was a coil on the BTH mag.

It may seem a bit odd to chose to run a pushrod cooking motor in races that are full of Manx's and G50 etc but there have been a couple of presidents set for many years in Australia and New Zealand by Geoff Clatworthy and Peter Lodge and this caused my interest. There are other interesting bikes out there that also bother the Manx's and these are supported by some very clever people that are prepared to offer advice.

At the test day, I struggled to get through the noise test, it failed at 108db with just the silencer, then at 106db with a Super Trapp end with a 50mm hole but passed with a 40mm hole, they didn't tell me the SPL though.

One of the things I altered after the test day was the exhaust, I extended the pipe to allow the silencer to fit behind the shock and therefor could be tucked in a bit more as it was burning my leg. This meant that the silencer was beyond the back wheel which isn't allowed, so I dismantled the silencer to shorten it, this is when I found that there was only a third of the needed wadding in it. So, shortened by 35mm but fully packed with the new wadding and the noise test was passed at 102db, we are allowed 105db so the job was a gudun.

Mallory is a short track and I was expecting to get lapped by the faster guys like Andy Molnar and Stefan Radakovic who get round in around 57 seconds, I was quite surprised to not be lapped and with my times around 1:04 I finished in 7 place overall, 6th in class, I think I like this bike.

The second race was run in the morning on Sunday as they ran out of time on Saturday. I had taken the Supper Trapp end off and had it retested for noise and it still tested at 102 so the next race was on an open silencer.

9th overall and 8th in class was the result and the lap time had dropped to around 1:02. The bike is good fun to ride and I was not far off what I was doing on the 920 Seeley, how does that work?

I felt I was not making the best use of the torque by being a tad under geared so I went down a tooth on the rear (my smallest sprocket) and was looking forwards to the next race.

This was not to happen when the dark side of this sport reared is ugly head and the meeting was abandoned when Stefan Manoli, a novice scooter rider in only his second race, was killed in a racing incident at the lake esses (Cooper esses). RIP.

Thanks for the writeup Ralph. I was wondering what you had been up to in the shed all winter. We do need some photos of the new Hooligan Special though.
Sad to hear about the fatal crash, fortunately it does not happen so often, but it's always a possibility. Mind you, Paul Smart survived a far more dangerous era, only to meet up with an errant driver on the public roads.
Which reminds me - I don't think I've read of any court case in connection with his death, is this still pending?

Glad it went well Ralph. Sounds a nice thing to ride. I was told it was a bad accident but was not expecting it to be that bad. Condolences to Stefans family.

I don't know about Paul Smart, these things tend to just be marked down as an accident.

Not got many pics, there are some of the bike without the fairing in this thread. https://www.accessnorton.com/NortonCommando/es2-engine-rebuild.34703/

It is Chris, I had to move the footrests to give me some wriggle room but easier to ride than the Seeley, I guess some of that is due to the lack of weight.

Brands, not been there before.
When?
Any bike mods beforehand?
Is that with the CRMC?
Short or long circuit?
I’ve only ridden the short circuit there, really enjoyed it.
Got a black mark last time out there tho… put Degans ‘72 Barcelona winner in the gravel …

6/8th of May with the CRMC and I believe it is the short circuit but not really sure.

I will be changing the fork seals and going to 10w oil from 5w but other than that I think I need to get used to the bike before I start making too many changes.

Were you on the 72 Barcelona winner when it won?

Been a bit slack updating this but I have a fairly good reason.

Brands was a good meeting, good paddock, good tannoy and a good track. All went mostly well, apart from a missed start due to being in the wrong place when a parade was moved to the other side of my race, I started from the pit lane and managed to run off the track on the first lap due to cold tires but it didn't make much difference to the result, I am a bit outclassed with the CRMC lot in the 500 races, plus I didn't finish the race due to a broken wire to the coil stopping the bike.

The front runners were pulling the best part of 20 mph more though the speed trap and there isn't much of a straight anywhere at Brands.

There was a really bad startline accident when Dave Matravers bike stopped near the front of the grid, one of the Super Monos starting from the back of the grid ran into him full chat, very messy and we thought the meeting was going to be abandoned, 2 helicopters landed and we were ready for the worst news. I had got changed and put the bike away when the meeting was re started and I got my last race.

The guys involved in the accident are recovering but it was touch and go for a while.

Oddly, despite the above, I think Brands was one of my favourite meetings.

The next meeting at Cadwell with the BHR was going better as the semi pro riders tend not to turn up.

The ES2 starts very well, it jumps off the line and I find I can pass people on the starts but things soon even out on the longer straights, even so I an enjoying riding it more than the bigger Seeley, although I think that may be making an appearance at the next couple of meetings.

I was getting close to the times I have done on the Seeley which is encouraging.

Anyway, to the juicy bit.

The third race of the weekend was going well and I was catching the guy in front and was sure I would get him before the line when there was a sudden lack of power accompanied by a bit of a clattering noise.

I took the head off at the track and the piston was showing marks from the valves touching it, but worse than that it wasn't going up and down when the engine was turned over. I managed to get what was left of the piston out of the bore and found it is now considerably shorter than it should be.

I have been busy altering my bathroom and had to get it more or less finished, so the bike has been left in the garage until today. The rest of what goes up and down and round and round hasn't faired much better than the piston and I have a bit to do before the next race in Anglesea next month.

First the wrist pin and barrel are a bit second hand and need more than a polish.

The crank and conrod have taken a beating.

The rest of the piston isn't happy either.

It bent a pushrod too.

It looks like the piston is a cast item and I would guess that is what let go first but that is only a guess, something didn't like the revs I was using that is for sure.

So, I have to spend a bit of time in the garage now.

Shit Ralph, that looks like a bit of a set back.

I would imagine you can add bent valves to the list too? I’d at least check them mate.

Are the crank and rods salvageable do you think (doesn‘t look like it to me to be honest). And what about the cases?

Do you want me to send you Andy Molnars phone number… ;)

I didn’t ride Brands very often, but I did like it a lot, I think I only ever rode the short circuit.

When and where are you out next?

No photos of the bathroom ??

As Blackadder says when about to go over the top - Bugger!

Looks like a long shopping list there. Know anybody with an excess motor they want to sell?

Best of luck with the bits though

Not had the valves out yet but will do, the rods and crank are toast, I am hoping the main shafts are ok as I want to use them in the Jawa crank cheeks I have. There is a dent in the cases right where a bolt goes through, other than that I see no real damage, I will clean them off and crack test them, if they are gone then I have another set.

The Molnar Manx's were a couple of MPH down on the Minnovation G50's and Martin is easier to deal with so a G50 would be the way to go if I don't rebuild the ES2. The thing is, I would really like to carry on with the ES2.

The next meeting is at Anglesea on the weekend of the 10th of June.

The bathroom is close to finished, as usual it was the work that surrounded the job that caused the problem, there was a chimney in the room that had to go, it is a long way up on our roof.

Very little of what is in the engine belongs in there, the piston is, or was BSA and I don't know what the crank is from so the shopping list is going to be a bit creative.

I would put a Commando in it Ralph.
You are a good man Ralph!
The problems you had to get it out on track would have had me in a dark room. With what's just happened with the engine, the bike would be going in a dark room.
Keep at it.

Better take that pix of the roof attack down, ElfnSafety will be at you for sure!
