After years of borrowing or substituting sockets for my head bolts etc, I am finally going to buy my own set. My question is, should I buy deep well sockets or will normal length do just as well?
Thanks,
Jaydee

Good idea. Normal length should be good for most. I've never needed a deep socket.

Not sure if they are still available. I bought five whitworth socket sizes from Snap-On 20 years ago. Std depth, 3/8" drive. Covers all the requirements I every have.

Unfortunately Snap On has discontinued them.
Snap On will refund the purchase price if they are broken -I have had to pick up replacements for cracked sockets on e-bay -but I ended up money ahead. Jim

What torque does it take to break a socket? and why buy the same brand if they fail early.

He who tests limits, breaks sockets.

Hi pete. V.
The limits of whitworth thread (even at G8) is well documented but appear to be beyond the sensible limits of Snap-on sockets.

Hi pete v.
I suspect you may be talking about yourself rather than discussing whitworth sockets so I will point this out to you and then bow out of this thread.Ta.

Who said fail early. I've had then since 1973. I may have even abused them once or twice.....

I use them and abuse them.... part of British cycle wrenching. You can get them from your local britbike supplier. You will not need to rob the piggy bank…but you need them if you own a Norton. Budget accordantly.

Thomas
