Re. Nightingale hospitals, were they ever used? even in the peak of any of the infection waves? I was under the impression that building them was the easy part, but staffing them would have been difficult, if not impossible. All the trained NHS staff were fully occupied in the existing hospitals.

Or, like The Kinks said, "Give the people what they want".
There might well be some of that. But that would only explain the relaxing of restrictions part, it doesn’t explain the other stuff, closing of nightingale hospitals etc.

The Nightingale were political, they wanted to be seen to be doing something, but like daveforty says, they never had any staff for them, total waste of our money.

The Nightingales could have been used with existing staff so as to spread the distance out between infectious patients and to create covid only hospitals. As it was some 30% of covid hospitalisations were from people entering hospitals for other ailments and then catching covid inside hospital suggesting that using Nightingale's as Covid only that would have reduced risk of catching covid in normal hospitals.

Well as the July 19th end of lockdown came in like a damp squid, the UK Health Secretary Sajid Javid was tested positive for Covid, so after a bit of ooohing and arrring The PM finally admitted defeat along with the Chancellor were spending today in lockdown.
I'm informed that California has brought face masks back again because of the spike of infection.
And just this morning, I've noticed about 80% of people where I was were still , sensibly wearing face masks in town, and ignoring the government's day of freedom.

Be fair, Bernhard, today is a lot more significant than just the wearing or not of face masks. For those whose jobs were decimated by lockdown (and not everyone got 'furlough' pay) it's finally a moment of hope that they can get on again. Fortunate are they whose only worry is where they can or can't holiday this year, for some that option is right out the window, and the possibility next year could be the same or worse...

As I do my weekly shop at 7am on Saturday there are not many people in there but I will still be wearing a mask for some months if not indefinitely.

at least it is not the Daily Maul.

"According to the 2014 Pew Research Study, Where News Audiences Fit on the Political Spectrum, the majority (72%) of The Guardian’s readers hold political values to the political left or left-of-center. 9% of The Guardian's audience is right or right-of-center (compared with 26% of all respondents to the survey). Roughly 20% of The Guardian's audience is considered mixed or center (compared with 36% of all respondents to the survey)."
The only "others %" that follow this rag are people that want to know what the enemies narrative will be next.
I'm so sick of hearing the "cases" night after night...

Speaking of things locked down in OZ - our Superspreaders really spared no effort in their "FY, I'm all right Jack" mentality...cannot believe travellers actions...ah well...shot next Thursday week. Pity my wheel builder is in a no-go/escape area.

Yes its a bit of a mess in Aussie land at the moment, more so down south NSW and Vic and now 1/2 the country is in complete lock down and most boarders shut, and people who think it can't happen to me mentality and doing things without care, me myself just stay home and away from crowds only going out when needed, but it only takes a few fools to stuff it up for everyone, our state pollies and Federal pollies are all blaming each other, they keep saying we are all in this together but the GOVs of our country are not, and the roll out of vaccines are a big mess and trying to role out a vaccine that has caused problems and wonder why people are waiting for the other vaccine (Pfzer) and when people get their first shot they have to wait longer to get the second one because there is not enough to go around, we are becoming the joke of the world with our roll out and now its biting us on the arse.

Meanwhile Canada has caught up and now passed US in vaccinated numbers, after a slow start from limit vaccine availability. We are now in the top few countries for vaccination rates.

100 doses per hundred, assuming two doses completes the vaccination schedule per person means half the population is vaccinated? Or that there are that many doses available?

It depends on which strategy is used. Different countries, different strategy. Some countries prioritizes the oldest and then in steps lower age. Also different time before second shot. Health and elderly care workers might be prioritized.
In my country, there is now 96.9% doses/100 people.
Fully vaccinated are 37.8%.
Over 85% of people over 50 has got at least one shot.

I would not say that the world think you are a joke. Most people don't makes jokes about a pandemic that has killed millions worldwide.
Australia have had very few deaths from Covid19 and still have a very low rate of deaths. So far we envy your handling of the decease.
That you now have some vaccination problems, which other countries have too, don't make you a laughing stock.
