Please can anyone tell me the maximum permitted sideways deflection of the triplex primary chain on my Mk3 Commando.
Thanks in advance.

Its not so much the sideways movement that is wear more so how much movement from front to back movement and how the chain sits in the sprockets teeth that is more crural, there will always be side movement in chains, for wear and tear it be how far the chain has stretched over its life, if it concerns you replace it with one of Andy the chain man duplex chain.

Ashley, Why would you recommend replacing a triplex chain with a duplex?

Have a chat to Andychain on this forum and he'll tell you why. I use his IWIS rear drive chains and now I wouldn't use anything else.

I have never noticed any significant amount of wear in the triplex primary chain. Seems to me that they go almost forever. I have noticed the chain can fail by developing cracks in the rollers. The cracks are hard to see, and you need to take the chain off, and rotate each roller to find them. Left long enough, pieces of the roller can drop off, which is easy to see at the bottom of the inner primary cover. If you have the chain off to check for wear, check for developing cracks. For the record, on the bikes where this happened, there were no primary chain alignment issues.

Primary chain will wear and become longer but pre MK111 primary's can be adjusted and will compensate. With MK11's,not so much the chain tensioners will work OK with a fresh chain but will allow chain slap when the chain is worn and stretched .
