I know this will sound like a plug but I found a great place that does powder coating. I did my 1971 Norton commando frame and frame pieces in gloss black and they turned out great. I took it to Do-Rite powder coating in the Fort Morgan area. If interested you call him at 970-380-1461, ask for Dwayne. I started putting it back together and can’t believe how tough powder coating is. It beats having to wait a week for the paint to dry.

Were the engine mount bolt areas masked (tranny cradle and front iso mount)? How about the large patches on the transmission cradle where the swingarm bushings and seals slide in place?

If they're not, you are abpout to find out exactly how tough powdercoat REALLY is! Those areas need to be taken to bare metal then given just a very light spray of Rust-O-Leum or other good quality paint. If you don't do this, you'll never get the swingarm in place with powdercoat there, and your engine mount studs will either loosen, break, or both, over time.

You also need the outer 1/4" of the front and rear isolastic mount tubes to be bare, or the caps will not slide on fully, and you'll have a dickens of a time installing them in the frame without bending it.

Yes everything was pretty much masked off. I did have to sand down the edges of the front adjustable isolastic’s end rings to fit correctly. Also the frame tabs had to be sanded down to fit the rear isolastic's properly. It is a very tough paint but worth the extra effort. I have the frame together and new front head yoke bearings installed. I made sure the engine and transmission would fit before putting the frame altogether. My biggest worry is installing the new wiring harness with the sparks electronic ignition system. I wish I had detailed pictures of how it all installs on the frame. Other than that everything is coming together great. Thank for your reply.

Power coating is a pain in the arse.

I shall never have a motorcycle frame powder coated again.

Paint only for me now !

I'm the opposite. The only 2 frames I had painted with heavy duty (oilfield rated) paint (with proper primer and prep) lasted about 3 years before stone chipping, scratching, etc.

I have some powdercoated frames going on 10 years now with nary a scuff.

Proper prep is key to BOTH powdercoat AND paint...

Powdercoat is not a single technology, use the wrong powder or preparation and it will fail. I powdercoat all my frames at a powdercoater that has been doing frames for 30 years and 20 years for me and no failures yet.

Ditto. The small-time operation I used to use was very conscientious (but closed down); the 2nd outfit I used was very good, but kept raising their prices. The folks I use now are EXCELLENT in every respect. All it took was researching their client list.

Have fun when you have to grind/file the powered coat back to bolt the earth strap back on the frame He He :D

Yes, it will stop Superman stealing your bike, won't have any effect on any Tealeaf wanting to steal it but Superman won't have enough energy to kick it over
