Now then Gents, this is a tough one.

My Aniversary CR 961 (number 50) has been an absolute peach, I had my doubts as I know many have had issues, but mine has been as trouble free as a Honda!

And, it’s great fun to ride (for short distances).

But I have a couple of problems:

1. I have 3 bikes of the same genre as the 961 (uncomfortable cafe racers that are fun for short distances, and I can only ride one at a time.
2. I have limited shed space.
3. I have a yearning for something that will do more distance more comfortably as I wanna do more long distance touring.

Mulling it all over, I am seriously considering selling my 961.

So, don’t fall over if you see it appear in the for sale section soon...

Then again, don’t be surprised if I change my mind completely either...!

What about fitting a straight bar?
Mine is comfortable with a more upright riding position - of course it wouldn’t then be a CF.
If you are serious, it will go quickly, limited edition #50/ 50....
Probably get exactly what you paid.

Parting with ANY bike is a tough choice.

I decided to sell my ThruxR (for pretty much the same reasons as you) but then I decided to keep her, so there is hope for you yet :)

If yours is really as trouble free as a peach, äh sorry, Honda then either you may get a very good price for it if someone trusts you that it is absolutely trouble free or you have to keep it. It seems really rare enough to have a 961 without any troubles!

Fast Eddie,
Build a bigger shed. After that go get a Road Glide Ultra. You can't have too many motorcycles. I could feel your itch coming on after the road trip in the U.S.. Why would you even take a chance on being "sorry you ever sold that one".

Check Riggsy - thread “UK cafe racer wanted”

Well, I have (finally by now) an almost trouble free MkI, but won’t sell it, because I wouldn’t get the price which would persuade me to sell it...

Maybe you should have kept the BMW R9T ? Wouldn't that be a better touring bike ?

I am in a very similar boat. But the value has dropped dramatically regardless of how loud your "trouble free" claim is. In my case I just need the cash to cover home construction expenses. Judging from the ads I've seen here in the States a major hit on price is required before anyone will even respond. :(

You guys are making me sad. The market is different in England I think. First you have the Norton Factory right there and within a 200 mile circle there may be 3 or more Great dealers that like selling Norton , a real British Norton. Can a British citizen verify what I just said ? 3 in a 200 mile circle (diameter) ? The lack of good Dealer support is going to kill the USA off eventually .

Chaps,

Charlie, yes I KNOW a bigger shed is the logical answer, but I live in a city, and I’ve already maxed out as much of the garden space for my shed as the boss will allow. And anyway, to be brutally honest, limiting my shed space was a deliberate move, part of my motorcycle re-hab, to STOP me getting carried away and accumulating... like I did before! And yes, the R66 experience is the cause of this!

Tony, no, the R nine T was a very hard core Cafe Racer. That’s not BMWs fault of course, it’s cos I can’t control myself!
And yes Tony, I would certainly imagine that in most of England and Wales you can never be more than 100 miles from a reputable Norton dealer, and must have at least 2 within 200 miles, Its worse up in the Highlands of Scotland though I guess.
But the worst case for any of us is to spend £200 ish to get the bike transported directly back to the factory. So yes, we have it EASY compared to the US and Oz etc.

But I must reiterate, I only live 100 miles from the factory, and my bike has been trouble free (so far), so reliability and / or service issues are NOTHING to do with my thoughts to sell.

Yes good guessamite Tony, I live in bottom right hand corner of the United Kingdom of Great Britain approx 20 miles from Europe! , factory 200 miles away & I would ride past 2 dealers on the way, another one is 90 miles to west near London Gatwick Airport & even at a push I could catch a ferry to France & nip To Belgium dealer 250 miles away ,so yes things are different here

Nigel,
Real motorcycles aren't supposed to be comfortable, if you want that then buy a Mercedes Benz.
Any bike can be a tourer, when I had my first Trident 40 years ago it was my
go to work on bike
go fast round town and frighten old ladies bike
go to drunken rallies bike
go to France on holiday bike
I can't for the life of me see why you can't adapt your 961 to go touring, all it needs is higher bars and luggage capacity.
Anyway just my opinion, next year I'll be off to Spain on mine.

Of course you’re right Sam, I ‘toured’ on my SS50! I toured quite a lot on my Tiger Cub. I toured a heck of a lot on my (totally unreliable according to popular opinion) TSS. So yes, the 961 can tour, as Blighty has showed us.

My current ‘urge’ is more than just wanting a tourer, I’m afraid I enjoyed riding the 107ci Hardly Dangerous a little too much.

It may surprise some to hear this part: jumping off a 107 onto the 961 makes the 961 feel slow!

The urge may pass before I act, we’ll see...

But in any sphere there is always something faster, better looking, or more economical etc.
I can't deny that I actually like Harleys, but I just can't put up with the bull shit that goes with them.
At the place in North Wales that I frequent, Harley riders (or most of them) completely ignore any other bike whatsoever and I mean it, they would walk past an F1 Norton or Rob North without a second glance , real bikers that they are :)
