I've just found my original points and aa unit, on the back of the aau is stamped 12'(degrees) can anyone tell me what that refers to, is it the correct unit for a combat?

It's the advance range of the AAU (12 camshaft degrees = 24 crankshaft degrees). All standard Commando AAUs were 12 degree, as far as I know, including the Combat.

Thanks for that L.A.B., are there any procedures for checking if the points opening cam on the aau has any wear?

It's usually the bore of the cam and the spindle that wears, so check for slackness, although the units can be re-bushed if necessary, it's probably still cheaper to find a good used replacement.

Yes the bore wears so later year ones are better I believe. But the Bob-weight guide track can wear out too from dry grease as this seems to be the most neglected area for lubrication / periodic greasings.

I answer to your question, if it looks worn, it probably is. If it wobbles on the shaft to much, it will be a problem to me accurately. they are a bitch to set up when they aren't worn as well. the main place is not a perfect fit in the housing, so after setting the points gaps etc, the attempting to set the timing, the gaps get stuffed up again. I don't check it of ten so have to work out what to do again. easier if you have the correct timing then to just adjust the points gap so that timing is correct.

Yep sir so much of factory issue vital items sucks so I'll take the AAU pos off your hands once ya decide to kick the unstable contact breaker ignition habit.
