Plug fouling issue.....

That is a very good question about the ignition system being over suppressed. I'm not sure how to tell if the plug wires are suppressed or not; however, if Matt only sends out suppressed wires, then this could most definitely be part of my problem as well.

You should set the timing with a strobe. Keep the resistor plugs.

Of course this will not affect the plug fouling unless the timing is far enough off to cause miss-firing.

Then either switch air filters or re-jet for the foam filter. Jim

I'm not sure if any of this matters, but additional engine modifications are as follows: bored .020 over with hepolite pistons, Megacycle 560NR cam, Black Diamond valves, chromoly pushrods, and unbalanced head pipes with straight through pea shooters. Anyone have any ideas as to what might be causing this? I'm almost to the point of being afraid to ride it after having to push it over a mile home last night....

Makes me feel so much better about my own improvements letting me down for sluggish fouling performance to silent swearing to self pushing or waiting on rescue. One make sure your Miki Mouse enriching level is not left in cold start position. Two if charger wires connection bad can get ya away from home a ways then misfiring stall outs as voltage drops makes ignition brains generally over advance. Bigger cam need better exhaust flow and higher CR to work well but would think standard headers with peashoots sufficient and increaseing bore size ups CR a bit w/o changing anything else CR wise. Maybe try a hotter plug range after going down checks listed by others. Could be a head gasket leak letting oil in enough to foul.

I wish I knew what the compression ratio is to be honest. This was my fathers bike and I inherited in 2000 when he passed away. Unfortunately, at the time, I was too young to fully understand the modifications of the bike even if he told me. Luckily, the only reference I have about the mechanical aspects of the bike is an article in Classic Bike it was featured in the mid-ninties.

Too low of CR for the cam profile only gives poor starts and poor lumpy rough idle and sluggish response til rpms climb so rush of mixture over comes the cam over lap interval and wakes back up nicely - if not quite as sharply if had higher CR. I do not suspect too low CR for your issues but can be ballparked by compression pressure test which is not same as risky complex compression leak down test. 10 CR 2S cam Combat with good ring seal should hit 190s and above kicking fast with WOT> Needing recently reported 200 PSI on his Combat with upgraded case venting and new rings. Only took me about a decade to get most the scope of Combat and lessor more complex models down and then the curve ball learning curve issues thats ongoing with your situation as perfect crazy making example. I get my head & ego fed daily by desperate paying patients some decades later many states away, like finding a new pet dog hair allergy blowing liver reflexes to low back muscles (similar to angina symptoms in left arm) so young athletic gal literally crawling in slowly but 30 sec later after issue found & homeopathic matched remedy tests strong on table and gets up pain free, yet I feel so stupid over my head helpless facing Commando issues, ugh, it hurts to think hard and learn stuff.

Btw in dog hair case, 3 yr earlier gal had L5-S1 segments crushed into bilateral nerves tracks paralyzing both legs when standing waist deep water facing beach when old school 12 foot long surf board point hit her, so was carried in that time and took 3 mo to recover, BUT me as stupid doctor ASS-umed the new event 3 yr later was just old injury flair up so did not look deeper - just treated the surface neuro findings easing pains and strength - which worked a treat -at the time - to get pain free but it all came back in spades over night - so thought Ugh no new injury to flair it up, what did I over look that no one else but a Clinical Kinesiologist could find, if alert enough not to be fooled by mere symptoms. Funny part was on 2nd visit flair up making me feel like wasting her time / money and finding reaction to animal epithelial and being 3 days after X-mass I guessed she had gotten a dog as gift, so looked at her asking out the blue, Whats the name of your new dog, she looked at me like I was a Witch Dr. which is reputation I had in Texas that made enough to quit the city and take up mysteries Commando life style. So is it chemical, structural or electromagnetics screwing with you?

Plug fouling issue.....

So, what was the dog's name?

That Mikuni has an enricher rather than a true choke You will see that when you push the lever down, a rod comes up. That rod is connected to a piston and a rubber seal sits at the bottom of the bore. Much like a faucet washer this is what stops the extra gas flow when the enricher is off, lever up. Just like a worn faucet washer will cause water to trickle into a sink, a worn seal can cause gas to trickle into an engine.
Worth keeping in mind none of the other suggestions help.

Dog name did not matter but dog breed and its individual unique genetic antigen phenotype protein expression as a Labrador breed did and as not included in the general animal epithelial remedy resonators of water clusters, had her bring the hair of that particular dog to add to and refine the targeting of the 10% ethanol liquid. Never saw her again after one more follow up, as no need afterwards. Legal health and Nortons require thinking outside of the obvious boxes too dam often. I try to refrain from intruding on people health issues here but do toss some clues out now and then on scope of hidden factors and now and then get a private consult.

Had another case of old rich well known Houston woman with sudden short breath, heart skipping and back pains about crippling, that no one could ID and bad reaction to medicine doctor drugs. Narrowed down to a wool allergy messing with upper cord reflexes, which she thought I was looney tunes with her MD only background but saw the remedy helped her on the spot so took it - still -saying i was just trying to make $10 bux extra and disgusted not to ever return,.. but came back in to apologize for the flak she gave me saying she had just gotten an old sofa from family with wool based textiles in it. I face same attitude on my Peel claims, so ask em if I care... It is not me being brilliant, just following body indicators same as my associates on similar level get amazing results from off the wall stuff that takes decades to learn about and how to check and resolve. So I am always in doubt about myself on dealing with Nortons, myself, family and patients.

Technically its called differential diagnosis - like seen on TV shows, listing everything they can think of to check and rule out what works or not. Trickier when more than one factor doing same thing at once. I look up to Nortoneers at all levels helping keep me informed on whats possible.

simple resistance test with a voltmeter will tell you
