Has anyone toyed with performance ignition coils, wires and plugs?? Just curious if it made any difference in performance.

I had them installed on my bike prior to receiving delivery, but that was just recently. South Bay Triumph - $150 US was the charge. Since I didn't ride it before, I don't know the before and after difference, but Matt Capri, the owner, assured me it was worth 4 HP. He has done quite a bit of testing on the bikes, so I think he has a good idea. Call him and ask for the details.

Do you know what brand coils? I'd be interesting in trying some out to see if there is a difference. Do your plug wires say NORTON on them or were they replaced too?

Oh boy. New performance toys. Can't wait for the aftermarket stuff to start hitting the market.

Hi ouptut coils should provide better throttle response, and better cold starting.

In my opinion unless you are making major mods with very high compression and needing race fuel, you won't get much from a coil and wire change!

Anybody else try the South Bay wires and plugs?

Specifically, what wires and plugs are they recommending?

The coils I listed in my manual I feel made an improvement. Still looking for wires.

The SBN ignition upgrade installed by South Bay included NGK Laser Iridium plugs, and the wires were NGK performance wire sets (blue wires), and as far as I can tell without removing the tank, and from what South Bay told me, the coil is stock. I am going to do the coil upgrade to the Bosch 0 221 503 035 coil that Richard has described in his ignition upgrade guide.

Would you by chance have the plug numbers handy? I'd like to try them and see if I notice any change.

The Iridium plugs work very well in my Yamaha two smoker.

FANTASTIC INFO>>> If you get a chance to pull your plugs, please share the part number. Interested to see if they went to a hotter plug. My dad is currently trying a hotter plug and it seems pretty good.

The NGK Iridium plug number is CR9EIX. The blue NGK wire set is not printed with a number I can find, but it is one of their performance wire sets with 4 1/4" smooth tapered plug boots (no shoulder) pre-installed (& originally without the bug juice now coating them). Hope that helps.

Many thanks Precisionbob! I was somewhat skeptical that the plug and wire kit would make a difference, so thought I'd try plugs first. I put them in over the weekend and must say that they do make a noticeable difference. I am running 0090 map with South Bay DT exhaust. This map did wonders for my low end fueling issues (and power), but the slight flat spot around 3200 rpm (cruising only, fine under acceleration) was still noticeable, albeit much improved over the stock map. However, the Iridium plugs smooth out the low end irregularities almost entirely.

I've always been pleased with my Café Racer, but it is now running better than ever as I approach 5,000 miles!

Thanks again.

Dbono, is 0090 the latest map from Norton or did SBN create their own?

Bob,

On a separate posting PrecisionBob stated that #90 was create by SBN for the SBN exhaust (SBN X-Pipe, and dominator silencers).
This is the system he ordered from SBN. SBN remapped his ECU with #90.

Fred

Fred, I am reading the same post as you and he stated that SBN installed Map 90 and does not mention the origin of the map. I am trying to clarify if SBN had succeeded with writing their own map or or Norton released a new MAP .

Fred in his reply to your question Precision clearly stated he does not know the origin of the map. Hence my question to Dbono.

Having spoken with Carlos at South Bay last week, he reported that they have not finished their remap yet. Carlos says that the 0090 provided by Norton does "quite well", so that's what they've been doing when setting up recent deliveries with the SB exhaust.
