This was posted on Facebook. I didn’t quite get what he was meaning so I asked.

Is this a joke?
He’s from Taiwan.
Studied at the University of Central Missouri in USA.
And worked as the engineering consultant at Norton motorcycles.

“Is this a joke”?...

It’s so difficult to sort fact from fiction in the whole saga, so it’s impossible to say!

The precise figure of 900 bikes worth of parts seems kinda difficult to believe IMHO. But the general point that suppliers haven’t been paid, and have parts on shelves, I think is beyond doubt.

Another thing that makes this hard for me to believe is this guy still lives in Taiwan.

Makes sense to me, Garner needed cheap parts but would not want the expense of sending UK people to China/Taiwan on UK salaries plus expenses. So he employed people in the area itself, lower salaries and lower expenses (in China the sales employees sometimes even get to self finance the expenses and then get it back on sales commissions, odd but true).

Not quite sure how the parts exist, normally its money upfront first in China, very hard to get them to commit without seeing some cash first, maybe the normal first 50% has been paid but the final 50% paid on Bill of Lading never came so they have the parts but only 50% of the funds.

This is Jose Cheng response.

You are correct, you don't have to trust me what I said now. This is OK for me.

I am sure you know 961 is a great bike and assembly in UK~
However.... do you know where the most 961 parts actually made?
You may have to figure it out by yourself, I just can't say no more at this moment.

I had ever tried to import 30 Commandos to Taiwan (within last year) , unfortunately, Norton said there are "too many"!
It was a pitty Norton promised suppliers there are 2,000 961 demand in 2019, but only made 80+ last year!

Right now nothing, and I mean NOTHING, would surprise me regarding the 961 development/production/assembly. I am sure the answers are all in the ledgers, that's assuming they haven't been burnt already :)

Thanks for sharing Scott ! Hello Jose , I look forward to your information and updates because there are many of us who love the 961 Norton Commando . I can say for sure that the latest hard parts that Norton were getting are of better quality and closer tolerances. If my new oil pump was made in Taiwan I am OK with that because it is a good one ! Also even getting barrels and pistons that fit properly was an issue for Norton early on. Norton were taking anything they could get and put them in the engines and we had to live with it... The latest (newest) parts had the proper fit and tolerances , I know because I have purchased them and have them on my shelf waiting to go on the bike in the future. Many of the 961 Commando's if they are like mine were assembled with barrels and pistons/rings at the outside edge of the tolerance range and most likely outside of it ! If all bikes were built with parts like FE's 961 we would have a much different (better) opinion of the 961 I can tell you that ! What a wasted opportunity this has been for all of us with this Norton debacle ! But this can all be fixed but it takes your time and some money .,. Keep up the good work I say , keep us posted Jose !

I’ll keep posting as news grows.

Back to parts and supplies I guess , here is the direct replacement for the Bosch Head Temp sensor for 961 Norton . This is extended range -40C to +150C temps the Honeywell ES120-0030 :

The Jumo probe I found is M14 & probe 7.5 reduced to 4mm, overall length 29mm. Temp range - 50 to 300, a lot to check.

The thread needs to be M12 x1.5 to fit my bike . The 29mm length is good. This probe must be available in many configurations to be sure. Like I said earlier , I found a good Head Temp sensor in the Honeywell ES120-0030 -40C to 150C range... If one of our European or UK members can find a reliable/available source please let us know . Those who have the smaller head temp hole need to use the small probe (from Panetone). But before you order better make sure you are getting the correct part because they won't take it back :( !

If needed I hope the Honeywell, readily available here, fits the bill.

Pull your temp sensor and see which one you have the 4mm or the 7.3mm probe. It is easy to do 19mm wrench. And if there are any markings on it. You have a Euro 4 , you may have the JUMO already LOL !

That's given me something to do today, cheers. Watch this space

From what I understand, Jose Cheng was liasing with Norton as a purchasing / QA agent. That makes sense, given his education.
Why this secrecy? Can Mr. Cheng at least share with us which group of parts were sourced in Taiwan? Cycle parts, transmission, engine components?

Thanks,
Knut
