I have got some Krauser plastic rectangular pannier frames and panniers which I will be fitting to my 961, using top shock mounts, pillion footrests, and the link bar to connect two frames at top rear, under the mudguard. It is looking pretty straightforward so far.
I will report as I progress.

panniers to fit 961
My soft givi motocross style paniers worked for me,the rear indicators acted like panier rails , bungee straps up & over taking the weight of them.
Downside was getting them on & off every day, Secure hard luggage is way to go, “ Watkins Glen “ race track in Up New York State in the back ground

and it also looks like I can mount a Krauser top box and plate to clear bodywork easily.

link to top of shock: I was looking for a short pieces of flat bar at Kempton jumble on Saturday and got pair of ‘50’s Dominator exhaust brackets, which had two holes already, and almost exact thickness to slot into plastic frames!

I would like to see your project and how you deal with different issues. The rear crossbar stabilizer is a must to stop the frames from fatiguing /cracking .

Will use stabilizer, just need to attach under rear of seat. No time yet to investigate.

Hi
I am considering the purchase of a s/h 961 now that prices are likely to drop. However I need a bike suitable for two up touring.

Which model 961 would be most suitable for touring, considering the mods required? (Cf, Sport, ...)?
Is it possible to convert the single seat into a dual seat? I would like to junk the fastback tail, adding a proper mudguard and full size dual seat.
Are panniers and a model specific rack available?
Will long mufflers (e.g., those fitted to the California model) clear medium size panniers? I don't want exhaust gases to pollute the panniers!

Thanks for your input!

Sport , Dual Seat version must be the obvious answer ? The California would be best with the higher bars probably . And if you are truly going to be two-up then the stiff rear suspension should be about right for you. The long mufflers may be a problem for some bags .

The long silencers are fine with the Krauser medium panniers I am fitting. The advantage with The Cali is that handlebar cables etc are nice and long, so lower bars are much easier to fit.

Well one thing is for certain... you do NOT want a cafe racer for touring...!

The Sport riding position was perfect I thought. The Cali looks more comfortable, but the ‘sit up and beg’ riding position will make you catch more wind, so it really depends on your intended touring speed.

It is not advisable to buy a single seat bike and convert it as the dual seat bikes had strengthened sub frames, so even if you wish to change the seat etc, you should start with a dual seat bike.

I have bought a touring screen to fit to the Cali, which may need a top extender/deflector, as without a screen I am too upright for long distance work.

I have now finished fitting them. I cannot post pics on the forum , but can send them to your
email. Mine is jannelder@aol.com

Jan, actually you can. For example, upload them to Google Chrome, then "Right click" on the imgage, choose "Get shareable link", copy it, then just paste that link into your thread.

Oh, and by the way for your own protection I would not recommend adding your email address on a public forum.

Cheers,

cliffa.
