I am trying to document Norton engine component weights , so I am asking for the following weights in grams of original Norton pieces found in an 750 Atlas, P11, P11A, N15CS, N15CSR, G15mk11.....as they all seem to share these same pieces (I don't need a side track on this "all the same" please) -
original piston stripped bare
original rings set
original pin with clips
original rod total weight with bolts, nuts, shells
or even
original piston, rings, pin and clips together
Also crank weight in grams.
see below
You can own a nice cheap accurate kitchen digital scale from a local store BedBathBeyond or EBay.
I am not asking for after market component weights
It would be nice to get input from many people, as well as pictures of the pieces you are supplying weight for.
Thank you

Look at how easy this is..cell phone camera, cheap EBay scale and you can provide valuable data....very little work required -

Re: Norton engine component weights in grams

Sounds a neat idea.
Can we ask though what we are going to do with all these photos/weights ?
Having a record of one complete engine - yours - may be useful,
and it would be interesting to compare others with.

I'm working on a record of the weights of all* the major components in my Model 7 - a plunger framed 500 twin, with iron engine.
They are something like 440 lbs fully assembled - more than a Commando. (and just half the claimed power !).
Only the major component assembled weights though, just for curiousity.
*At least I would, but the kitchen scales won't record some of the heavier bits... !

And since dish topped Atlas pistons are seemingly no longer available,
it may be a far more useful exercise to report and show what is available in the way of new pistons these days.
Including maybe a report on how they go, if the bike rebuild is far enough advanced to report this...

I guess any brazed lug plunger frame is something of a monstrosity.

Re: Norton engine component weights in grams

As the current crop of about ALL the cruiser makers will tell you, you need a bit of weight to smooth out the ride...

And it does give a surprisingly smooth ride. On modern roads.
(Somewhat crude suspension notwithstanding.)

We sort of take bike developments and improvements for granted these days,
but it wasn't always so.
Like a time machine going for a ride, in some ways.

But we diverge.

Re: Norton engine component weights in grams

The weights of piston, pins, rings, clips and even that of the rods appears well known and so I/we are not needing this weight info any longer.
What is not well known, to me at least, yet an accurate crankshaft weight and this needs to be a gram scale. So I am reducing this request to crank weight. in grams please. Just the crank shaft. Maybe another thread did a study of this?
P11 Norton engine piece weights in grams

Thanks

Re: Norton engine component weights in grams

Sorry, my kitchen scales only goes to 4 kg I've discovered.
Not even seen your heavy duty version...

The size of the big end journals is going to alter the overall weight a tad,
will mask if the balance factor can be related to crank weights ??

Re: Norton engine component weights in grams

I have a lot of weights for Commando engine bits, none for P11, Atlas, etc. that you specified, so haven't posted any. Let me know if you are interested in the Commando weights.

Would be very interesting for a quick comparison, see if it is in the same ballpark.

Just posted some info here:http://www.accessnorton.com/commando-engine-weight-and-balance-information-t21342.htmlKen
Excellent bit of information, but as I look down the right hand column, I quickly realize that the data I am seeking is not there.
total crankshaft weight of a stock 750 Norton.
and/or the bob weight of a stock 750 Norton crank.
And actually I would prefer Atlas 750/P11 info, but at this point I would take data from any model 750 Norton.
I don't have an interest in aftermarket items at this time.
Has this stock Norton crankshaft info ever been recorded?

Thank you for responding to this subject, excellent data.
