I just realized that while my tank from India seems great, the side panels are an older style and say "Norton 750". The oil cover fits, but the battery cover has some kind of inner panel that keeps the panel too far away.

I never had mounted the original battery cover, the person I bought it from in the late 70's had gotten rid of the original air box & fitted a K&N filter so no way to mount and I lost it somewhere over the years.

My question is, if I can cut the inner panel off (?plasma cutter?) how can I mount it? I think I can replace the decals if I can get it mounted.

If you cut out the toolbox and install the Dzus fastener on the frame from a 1971-74 Commando, you will have two of the original mounts. The front tab and the top rear peg will align. However, the Mk III battery tray does not have the lower peg for the lower rear mounting hole. This could be fabricated and mounted to your existing battery tray.

It would be simpler to obtain a Mk III left side cover and cut and bend a sheet metal bracket that will bolt to the frame (where the early Dzus fastener mounts and accepts the Mk III Rotolok fastener at the top front. The Mk III cover has a lower tab at the bottom that fits behind the Z-plate and one hole at the rear to mount on the frame peg.
 
Here is the bracket needed for using a Mk III left side panel without the original air box.

Alternatively if you are not using the Mk3 airbox you could change to an earlier Mk1 /2 or later 750 battery tray 06-1651 which would also allow you to run the earlier style air cleaner 06-7354 with 06-4894 back plate, sorry I don't seem to be able to attach photo's but check them out on Andover's web site

Thanks so much for the help! Andover apparently is out of left mkIII side panels, and they aren't often on eBay either. Any thoughts how to remove the tool box?

Also, the panel I have has a strange looking bracket that may be usable, thinking of pulling the battery out so I can size it up.
 
I would try and trade the side cover for another without toolbox. I think the toolbox version is somewhat desirable.
 
My Mk3 has a single carb and K&N. The battery side panel is attached in just 2 places, bolt at the top and the rubber press in grommet attaching to the frame mounted bracket on the side towards the top. No lower mounting. It seems firmly in place and no sign of damage.

The Mk3 battery side panel should have a tab and grommet (10) at the bottom to secure it behind the Z-plate the same as the oil tank panel. Your "bolt" should be a Dzus fastener (15) although the hole is in the top of the Roadster panel, not as drawn on the diagram.

Yes, understood. I prefer what I have, without the Dzus, though I didn't make the modification. The 'bolt' (screw #11 in the link you posted + washer 12) and grommet arrangement keeps it nicely secure, without putting stress on the panel. Just mentioned it as it may have prompted a solution.

The plastic Dzus in my post has since been replaced with a metal one as the receptacle broke.

On a different note, I'm rebuilding the brakes and considering the 13mm front master cylinder from Andover. The bike is pretty much all original, does changing to the 13mm master cylinder decrease value at all?
