The factory manual says;
The criterion of the oil pump condition is the degree of end float on the oil pump pinions,most easily felt by movement of the drive gear relative to the pump body.
I don’t understand what is excessive. I can move my drive gear very little and wanted to know what is acceptable.

I work to stiffness of the top nut turning by placing a spanner on the top nut and using one finger about 2 inches along the spanner. On a lubricated pump it should show slight resistance, at that level of resistance you will not detect any end float by hand but there will be some if you took it to a quality lab for measurement.

kommando,
I don’t understand what you mean by the top nut.Do you mean the nut that holds on the drive gear? I appreciate your reply
Thanks,Mike
