Some people say you can weld up cylinder skirts; I WOULDN'T WELD THIS ONE.

I would not reuse that but I wonder how this occurred? Can anyone explain how this damage happened?
 
I finally got to get into my 1973 Commandos engine last night. It was mildly seized.

What do you guys think? Is it toast?
Yes, it is toast. Even if fixed, the chance of it breaking off and destroying the entire engine is too great. Watch eBay. You will find a decent replacement if not in a great hurry.

Is it a 750 or 850? If 850, AN has new ones in stock - expensive but very nice.

Most I've seen cracked were dropped. Otherwise, it may have been overly worn and piston slap - hard to say. Of course, since cast iron could be just "S" happens.

I'm not sure how the damage occurred to the cylinder skirts. the pistons were frozen in the bores so I'm thinking it happen when I removed the cylinders from the case. I had to rap on the pistons with a wooded dowl to get them to move..
Oh well Live and Learn.
I dug through my parts Shed and found a nice set of cylinders at +10 bore.. I'll order a set of +20 piston kit and get them bored.
It kinda sucks as it was still a std bore on the damaged cylinders

On the other hand, if you can clean both bores on +20, the barrel has a lot of life yet. As Greg noted, "s..." happens.

If 850 it be be fitted with a liner.

750s can too, but they’re a bit thin, and are therefore weakened by fitting a liner.

I almost got excited today as I was going to one of my tickle trunks of new parts and I came across some new std rings.. the replacement jugs cleaned up nice and the std pistons fit nice then I went to measure them and I had 6 thou piston to wall clearance..
Too much in my books :(

Did you measure the bore taper?
Did you measure the piston skirts?

In theory, .0037-.0047 clearance is acceptable for a rebore - I specify .004". Bore taper of up to .005" is acceptable. So, you may be in the acceptable range depending on where you measured.

That said, .006" would bug me too.

I broke out my outside micrometers and dial bore gauge.
Piston measured 3.026 ( piston skirt )
STD Bore should be 3.030
Bore size is actually 3.036 ( measured front to back mid cylinder bore )
Cylinder Taper Is .001

I’m a bit rusty at measuring. It’s been awhile.

Oops! 850. So, the factory bore was 3.0315 to 3.0325 Pistons, bottom of skirt: 3.028 to 3.0271 So it sounds like the pistons are undersized and the bore is oversized.

.001" taper is good to go.
 
Just measured pistons again. I got 3.028 at the bottom of the skirt
Let go back to the feeler guage. With the piston in the cylinder with the wrist pin side to side and the skirt even with the bottom of the bore. What is the gap between the skirt and bore measuring in front or back.

The measurements are saying that either the cylinder is over bored/honed, or the piston is made wrong/worn, or you're not getting the measures right. My guess is that the bore is over.
