Got it! Its on the Norton web site.

I'll be going to the NEC show and am looking forward to have a look at it there.

£44k for first 200 special edition types, guess they got more polished/carbon fibre bits/one off bits etc, & yes £28k for a standard ones ,so ATM don't know if it will be the S.E ,built first or may be bit of both, however I believe their not short of orders ! No real details other than that till the unveiling at N.E.C. Motorcycle live show next month, lot of hype maybe ,but no different to the new Honda African twin launched last year , where it was all revealed at last years show after teaser video s & the odd pics, let's hope it sounds as good as the TT bike.

The 1200 does look to be a weapon, but riding position and hp are both beyond me these days.
Hopefully the baby brother does see the light of day, i'm keen to see what that turns out like.

So is the road bike going to be using the same V4 Aprilia engine they used in the TT race bike because I thought i read they wrere to be using their own engine which they could if they are claiming the race bike uses a Norton engine. Confusing.

The new Norton V4 1200 sportbike will use a new V4 engine designed in cooperation with car maker Aston Martin.
The IoM bikes entered by Norton the last few years used an Aprilia V4 motor.

I thought it was being designed by Ricardo ??

I hadn't heard that before.

The initial interview with Garner where he first let the cat out of the bag that Norton would build 2 new bikes - V4 1200, and 650 parallel twin, he, Garner stated that the engines would be designed/engineered in cooperation with Aston Martin.
That the 650 would be basically the front 2 cylinders off of the V4.

I don't know if Garner's plans changed since his original public release off the project.

Its all over the net its being designed by Ricardo.
There is a quote there someplace the "2 wheeled equivalent of an Aston Martin"....

So, someone is mixing their metaphors - and designers ?

I don't know what Aston are doing currently, but for many years their engines were basically 'breathed on' Ford designs. The V8 was built at the Ford plant in Cologne, I'm not sure about the V12, but I think that was built at Bridgend, Wales (worked as a consultant at Ford for a while and had minor involvement in some of these projects). If they had any sense, they would buy something 'off the shelf' from someone like Mercedes rather than try and design their own IMHO. TVR insisted on designing their own engine on a (relative) shoestring budget. And that killed them!

So, as desirable as the name association may be (Aston / Norton tie up does sound awfully romantic), I would personally have far more confidence in something coming out of Ricardo's design studio than Aston Martins. They simply have far more experience in such matters.

I had the... err... "experience" of owning an Aston Martin Vantage V8, a 2006 model. It made old Norton ownership look a relative breeze... Yes it had glorious leather and paint finish and looked 'drop dead gorgeous'... but it spent SO much time at the dealership workshop on SO many occasions. A painful experience. Emotionally and financially.

Which is probably why I shied away from a new 961 recently... I'm still nursing the scars from one 'bespoke, exotic, hand built by British craftsmen' experience and I'm not quite ready to go back into that water for another dip just yet...!

So thats cleared that up - not. My monies on an Aprilia engine. The trailer gives the impression the buyer will be getting a race derived motorbike - so more confusion as they wont be, or will they?

Garner has quoted in several places already that they are developing their own, new, 1200 engine. I've seen this statement on line and in monthly / weekly publications, but I don't have any to hand to quote you.

Now, whether or not that's sensible, or actually likely to materialises or not is, of course, open for debate.

Personally I wish them the very best of British luck with it. But I cannot help being slightly sceptical as new engine deign and development is such a huge and costly exercise. The low volumes will reduce manufacturing engineering costs though I would suggest. I would in fact presume that Ricardo will actually manufacture the engines, or at least core components, as that's what they specialise in. Thus saving millions for Norton with regards to tooling and set up etc.

Shouldn't we have a dedicated 1200 thread page now / soon...?
