Hi, so here is the story, I went this week end to a track day with my newly rebuild norton
everything new inside (JS piston/rods, JS cam stage 1 etc..), new PWK 34mm JS carbies (170 main jets, 35 idle jet as JS advised), new Pazon Altair with Dynatek coil (5 ohm), spiro plugs wires, resistive plugs (Champion RN7 y), AND new Smiths Puca tacho, after a strong rain some water found its way in the tacho ( some water under the glass), the bike was running pretty well in the shed , but no way on the track, I shot three pair of new plugs.....looks like running on one cylinder sometimes, start very easy (timed at 30°, stobe checked), the tacho stopped working quite early, so no way to check the revs , but nothing at low revs , and sometimes good response at higher revs , but after many carbs dismantle and cleaning , new plugs , no more high revs , just pottering round the track like a snail........at the end of the day , we suspect the tacho giving bad waves to the ignition unit , as they are linked ....but end of the track day, back home , with the trailer, and seven hours drive , a bit disapointed .........of course too much friendly people around giving their opinions (you should know that!!!) " did you try this...! did you try that!).
so why not take my chance here, to get some more feelings ......
I had phoned to Andover where I had bought the tacho, to explain it was not water proof, and Simon ask me to send it back for checking..........et voilà..........

Pierre:

With tach removed, and wires isolated from ignition, how does the bike run?

There have been a few reports of Pazion cam trigger attachment not giving proper triggering clearance but everything electrical tests perfectly. My Trixie Combat was one of those cases, would start in fits and misses but die quickly till couldn't even get spark anymore type of frustration.

Hi slick , I barely could test it with the tacho off, as the track was closed.....but before it starts easily then sputters , just to say it was a new shorai battery ( I brought two new batteries!!).......
steve, yes , it looks more like an ignition problem than a carbie one , but at the start we were very suspicious about them (nothing relative to flatside, but just after that strong shower, water could go inside , so I drained first the bowls , then dismantle them.........
But what make methink Igni, was th good easy start (with the kick !!), easy revs on the pit stand , then on load on the track.........puf , puf, boom, snail attitude ( french speaking , i am not english native , just the island down under called small brittany!!)

Just to add, I remove the fuel filters, then the uni air filter , just in case.........same for the ignition handle bars cut off (and key ignition!!)........shame if I need to send back that Altair to NewZed for testing........

Pierre:

I agree with Hobot....most likely in ignition. I am dealing right now with an old Ford pickup that is doing the same symptoms as your engine. In my case, I suspect the coil. You said seems like running on one cylinder....could be one of the coils. Have you verified spark on both cylinders? You could pull one coil wire off plug at a time to see results.

Keep us posted.

it was the coil on my truck.

I, not too long ago, installed an Altair as well and followed to the letter the install instructions. Steel core wires, nothing fancy here. The twin 6 volt coils it already had. (the instructions call for those or a single coil of between 3-4.5 ohm so you are .5 ohm over that) And the 5k suppressor plug caps included. Are you using those? If it was me, I'd go back to exactly what's recommended and see how it is then. Otherwise you'll be shooting in the dark. Check out the important notes section on pg. 3 of the manual. I should add, that I've had absolutely no issues with my ignition.

I found the Altair has to have the magnet precisely centered or it will mis-fire. Be sure there's zero runout.

Fixing that it's definitely better than the analogue Boyer.

Could be an alternator issue as well, even a brand new battery gives up after a period without load.
