Hello - I was handed down a '71 Commando from a generous friend who hadn't kicked it over in years. It's a little rough, but the engine is strong.
I had a shop back home get it running again and I had a blast on it last summer.

Since then it's sat and now I'm in SF.
I'm hoping to get it back on the road and I'd love to gain more mechanical knowledge. (I've never had the teacher/opportunity to learn any of those skills before.)

Would anyone know who I could talk to around the Bay Area? Someone who could either walk me through a carb rebuild, etc or at least a garage I could take it to that could get me up and running the right way?

I rode my other bike down to Alice's Restaurant for the first time a couple weekends ago and I was excited to see the Northern California Norton Club sign!

Thanks!

Of course there is Ken Armann, the Norton guru in Campbell (Near San Jose) who had a shop specializing in
Norton Commandos and other British bikes. .

A carb rebuild is a pretty easy thing to do, but I guess not if one has never done it before.
I am located in Santa Rosa, CA and would be happy to show you about Amal carbs.

There is Jim Carton in San Leandro. He does excellent work, but his turnover is slow, to say the least. His numbers are 510-909-7572 and 510-706-3374

Contact the Northern CA Norton Club. http://nortonclub.com/ I'm sure that there are many members that would be happy to chip in and help. Most of us are moto weirdos and love to welcome new recruits into our little corner of geekdom. Most clubs hold tech sessions and it sounds like you could benefit from such an interaction. Welcome aboard!

Hans,
NCNOC club mtg at the Swinging Door Thursday evening May10. Address is 106 E 25th Ave, San Mateo. Ken Armann will likely be there. Around 7pm.

Raber's Parts Mart in San Jose know their stuff and have a large inventory of original Norton and other British bike parts.

I've got some Amals sitting on my bench that have not been used in forty years that I need to go through. I am pretty busy for the next couple of weeks with all sorts of things but, I would be happy to spend an evening using video conferencing to go through them with you. They are not hard to work on. I do not consider myself a Norton expert, but I've been making stuff work for a lot of years and manage to keep my carbs tuned. I won't be able to teach you how to tune your bike for racing. I would be able to show you how to take them apart, inspect the various pieces and get them back together in a manner that should work.

I live in a remote spot and have wondered a lot about using video conferencing in this manner. I would consider it an adventure to try it out. And it would force me to get those carbs done! Sadly it will be near the end of May before I have time to try something like this.

If you’re going to the trouble of videoing the job, why not post it on you tube ?

Really appreciate all the replies.
You guys are probably going to hate this, but the bike came with a Mikuni...:D

Posting a video on Youtube is a completely different experience than interaction between participants in real time via video conference. I feel confident that a video conference could be a good experience. Not so sure about my ability to do a video that would be worthy of posting.

It appears to be a bit of a moot point now that we discover the carb in question is a Mikuni. I've never owned one, so can be of very limited help on it. My best advice is to find members here who love them and care for them. There are many.

I still think video conferencing has potential as a good tool for forum use. Maybe just not this time!
