Hi all,
From new was the Norton logo in the timing case highlighted with paint?
I think I have seen both red or black paint used. Is this standard?

I don’t believe so - at least for 1972 manufacture Roadster . I’ve had two and neither showed any evidence of the cast in logo having been painted . Others more knowledgeable than I may be able to say for certain.

On my 74 Norton no paint on the logo I brought it new, I have the brochures for the 75 models hanging on the wall of my shed but all the bikes the pics are all from the left side, a lot of people paint the logo to high light it better and thought about it myself, just never got around in doing even after 46 years, but have seen a few Norton's that have been painted by their owners.

My understanding is that no bikes left the factory with painted lettering at any time during Commando production.

If you look, most of the brochures with painted in lettering originate from the USA.
This tallies with an account from someone that used to work for Berliner - they did some work, including on marketing/press bikes.

It wasn't uncommon for the dealers to block in the lettering either in black or red on both sides of the pond - parked next to the japanese bikes that were coming in thick and fast, they felt it would help to move stock.
...same as pin-striping a car that had been on the forecourt for too long I guess.

I never saw a stock bike painted. Always wanted to paint mine but suppose the neighbors noticed and made the dreaded
remark: "Hey, that's not STOCK!"
oh dear...

Bought this bike in 82, it had the Timing case and the disc inner highlighted in red, presumably the dealer did it, I just refresh it every few years with Post Office red which is a good match.

I bought my Mk3 in the crate and it did not have painted logo. I still have the new brochure which like the above has the painted logo. Must have been the ad guys touch, and maybe some dealers copied it.

Can't say if it's right or not, but I painted mine black and it looks fine to my eye.

1975 Mk3, no sign there's ever been paint on there. But it was restored 10 years ago.

What a shame to the photographer!!!!A Norton picture must always been taken from ''The money side''!

when i got my 74 Mk2, the lettering was painted black, however, it looked like a 10 year old with a 10-cent paint brush did the job. some of the paint chipped off, and there were no signs of an underlying color. i stripped the paint lettering and left it "au naturale" -

Dealer in Millis, MA had 3 MK IIIs in crates. He let me trace the red/white/blue paint scheme after paint shop screwed mine up. Those bikes, still in the crates, did not have any paint in the logos.

I often wondered what happened to those bikes. He was sort of eccentric, said he wanted them buried with him.
