Hi all,

I'm currently in the process of a thorough service on my 74 JPN. Giving it a full respray of all the glassfibre panels and cleaning the electrical system.
The intention is to keep it all as close to original as possible, as I would like to keep the patina. In order to correct some things i'm looking for some parts, but they do not seem to be available through Andover Norton. I'm currently looking for the following parts:
- The Dzus fasteners that connect the fairing with the fuel tank cover.
- 1 'hanknut' to connect the seat to the frame (there's 4 in total but 1 is missing)

Also the front exhaust pipes could do with a refinish. What is the best option available? I was thinking of getting them ceramic coated, or would it be better to buy a new set?
And my last question for now: I currently have TT100 tyres, and consider changing them for something a bit more 'sticky'. What are the best options for a more modern tyre?

Avon Roadrider MKII for sticky tyres, 90/90 front 100/90 rear or 100/90 front and rear, the 90 front will quicken the steering.

Before spraying the fibreglass I would be looking at instead either cutting back the gel coat to restore or applying a new gel coat. That will be more original than a spray paint.

how can a new gel coat be applied?

Gel coat is applied to the mould to become the outer layer, flowcoat is the coat used to replace worn gel coat.




As it was originally a gel coat then it would have been bought as a BS or RAL colour, so a flow coat sprayed over the gel coat in the right shade will give you an original look.
 
I know of a person that will apply the proper gelcoat it is very expensive because there is a lot of hand work,located in Iowa .

As far as I know there are no new black chrome head pipes for sale anywhere, the finish is impossible to reproduce. The Dzus pieces are available you will need to do a internet search, there are different sizes and screw head types.
 
For black chrome pipes - RGM used to have (back in their paper catalogue days) 1 1/2 Dia pipe systems.

I had some Viking pipes on a T160 some years ago. Perfect fit. Chrome deeper and more robust than any chrome I’ve seen before or since. Great stuff.

Only down sides are, not cheap (understandably, hand made by a craftsman vs mass produced in Asia) and long lead time. But overall, very much worth it IMHO.
 
Thanks for all the responses thus far. I have already gotten the parts back from the paintshop with everything repainted and new decals etc. so applying gelcoat is no longer an option.

I will look into the condition of my current downpipes to see if getting them rechromed is an option, otherwise it seems i should contact viking exhausts.

The main concerns i have at the moment is getting the correct Dzus fasteners and 'hanknut' for the seat so a pointer would be greatly appreciated. For the Dzus fasteners i do not know which size should be used as i don't think i have any original fasteners left.
 
I have a handful of the ORIGINAL Dzus fasteners, but I think it is only 7, not all 8.

PM me, I will locate them.
 
I am still looking for the Dzus fasteners for the main fairing and 1 'tee nut' / 'grip nut' 1/4 UNF that's used to fix the tail fairng.
Is there anyone that could help me out? it's the only bits that are keeping me off the road at the moment unfortunately.
 
Harley Davidson also did black chrome pipes on their "cafe racer" from the 70s also (77?) Maybe they copied the JPN because it's soo dang cool...
