I have purchased a K M/H speedo dial face for the 961 however I have not determined how to remove the original dial face. Has anyone disassembled their 961 speedo.
Thanks
Bill

If you figure it out that would be amazing. My needles are falling off and I cannot remove the bezel. I tried on my dads smashed bike and we destroyed it. I think they are glued.

I have a spare gauge that has broken mount screw holes. I’ll see if I can remove the bezel without damage.

I bought my Commando in the UK, so the face was in mph. As I live in Belgium, I wanted a gauge in km/h. I tried to open it, but it was glued. So I had to order a new metric gauge from the factory.

So far I have been able to remove the bezel only to find the clear face is sealed to the black base, which by looking at the seems in the unit looks like one piece. I feel the clear lens is sealed but maybe with heat will be able to be removed. Nothing comes off from the back. I contacted lockwood UK who make the dial but have not heard from them yet.

What does the dial on the metric gauge look like, what did they charge you and is there a part number, just in case I run into problems.
Thanks

I have just replaced the dial face on the 961. I have taken photos of the process and the finished product. It can be done however you have to take it easy. I will fill you in in a few days.

I have created a file that describes how to replace your speedo arm, however it is to large. Send me your e-mail and I will forward the file to you.

I also purchased a replacement Km dial from lockwood and had to figure out how to fit it as it had no instructions how to disassemble the speedo.
It is a VDO Viewline gauge and is almost 100% plastic including the bezel. The viewline has snap on interchangeable bezels that can be removed by prying off from the rear with a thin blade using the groove to work around the circumference. Once this is off the double skinned lens is laser welded to the body, but i found that a thin craft knife blade carefully worked around and gently twisted between the lens and body broke the weld in 10mm increments, then you are able to remove it, The needle removal I found best using 2 teaspoons.. tips placed under the needle at right angles to the pointer and lever it off.
The face is removed by rotating it and pulling it away. Put on the new one and push on the needle at the zero mark, It is a stepper motor so you cant go wrong, At this stage I temporarily taped the lens to the body and refitted it and rode it to check all was ok. Then used silicone rtv to re seal the lens to the body then refitted the bezel and good as new.
Hope this helps any one of you that is still wanting to try it.
I also have the info for recalibration from VDO if anybody needs it.

Good Job Gentlemen ! This is great information . I would probably crack my dial face lens if I tried that . :(

I would not from lack of skill, but patience. The scalpel/Xacto knife is what I thought would do the trick. Also, maybe one of those flat bladed vibrating electric cutters.
