No battery drain after 6+ weeks...

Ok, I’m exaggerating slightly in the thread title as I haven’t actually measured the battery, but, having sat for just over 6 weeks it started up immediately on the first press of the button.

I’m not saying that to gloat! I’m posting it to point out that this is what they CAN achieve, so if yours has a bad parasitic loss, it is NOT a case of “they all do that sir”... It is because something is wrong.

Hopefully I’ll not be able to do a longer test, until winter at least, as I’d like to try and make time to ride the bloody thing whilst we have the weather...!

It would be great if its fixable but what causes the drain I wonder? Theres no way I can leave mine off the charger

I’m sorry to say that I have no idea as to the cause(s).

Just wanted to point out that there must be a solvable cause somewhere...

Great news that you can start your bike when sitting without a maintenance charge for 6 weeks. !

Hello Fast Eddie , I just wanted to get what you are telling us straight. You can leave your 961 not driven and unplugged for 6 weeks . And when you get back it starts on the button ? Have you ever gotten a key off current drain figure for it ? That is good news , and if we had someone ask the factory ? MXMartin said the lead marked ECU is what is drawing his power . I have done a 2 week no charge/no riding test and my bike started. But 6 weeks is very good ! You are also running a Shorai battery correct ? Me too. My SC ECU key off current drain is under 1 ma ~ .9 ma . You would think that the power could be switched ON through a relay when you turn the key on and therefore have no current drain when turned off. And the big questions is WHY such a huge difference between your bike and the rest of them ?

Hi Tony,
Yessir, that exactly what I’m saying, bike left alone for 6 weeks and 2 days and then started on the button without any distress at all.
Bike was not on a charger.
Yes, it has a Shoria battery, the only time it has ever been on a charger was to charge the new battery when I fitted it.
No, I have not ever measured any voltage loss.
I don’t think mine is ‘special’ ... it’s just how they should be!
My reason for posting is to give a little ‘power to the elbow’ of those who might be asking Norton to investigate and find themselves being told ‘they all do that sir’.
No they don’t...!

I have to assume it has a lot to do with the Shorai battery. I have had similar good results with the Shorai in my Triumph. That thing is a voltage hog when starting cold. I let the starter turn for 3 seconds sometimes and the battery always comes through. Wasn’t the case with a typical SLA battery.

Had the same problem with my 2015 961 when new, problem was the battery was left flat by dealership and it was damaged, it would not hold a full charge. Changed battery for a standard AGM and after 3 years it still starts up after being left for over a month, which I have done a few times.

Just checked the static drain current and it’s 8 mA, the AGM is an 11 Amp/hour battery so will last way over a month. Better with Lithium type as I assume they have higher capacity?

TonyA check your reading I suspect it’s 9mA not 0.9mA ?
Assuming my calculations are correct I suspect owners with problems either have batteries that are not getting fully charged or are not holding a full charge.

OK , that could be 9 and not .9 . I will be in there again to have another look.

Chaps,

Due to work and family and weather and etc, I’ve been struggling to get much riding done this year.

In fact, the 961 hasn’t been used, or started, since our NOC meet on 12th May.

It has NOT been on a charger whilst parked up.

Today I thought I’d dust it off as I’ll be thrashing it around Mallory Park this weekend. I planned to put it on charge, but thought I’d try it first...

It fired up straight away. That’s after 2 months of sitting.

Since picking mine up last September it has never been on any charger whatsoever , and fired up after 2 months winter rest first time, no problem .Factory fitted battery and living in fairly cold Northern hemisphere.

That's impressive. Mine will fire right up after a week or so off the tender, but the digital display goes berserk until charged. Freezes up and Trip resets to zero during my ride. Odd. Never had a problem starting it though if I forget to plug it in.
