I’m in the process of converting my Interstate into a Roadster primarily to improve the seat foot peg relationship after discounting moving the pegs back due to rider/pillion foot space anyway, my tank and panels are going to be at the painters a few more weeks so I’ve decided to have the wheels rebuilt, the wheels let my bike down, the rims are ok but the spokes and nipples aren’t great. This is a job that’s needed doing and I’ve read everything I can find on the subject of wheel sizes originally thinking I’d go down the 19/18 combination. However, I’ve put some effort into sorting the handling, decent shocks, Lansdown fork internals, Dave Taylor head steady and sorted the wheel offset so everything if perfectly lined up, the bike handles really well so I’ve decided to keep the 19" front/rear combination. I called my wheel builder yesterday and he’s ordering in a pair of flangeless alloy rims and going to build them for me with stainless spokes. The wheels will be back before the tank so I’m losing no time into the bargain just a bit more cash...

If you ask Avon they will tell you can fit Roadriders to WM2 but the shape will not be ideal, so now is the time to get wider rims to improve the profile, but if the die is cast then you can still fit them as plenty already have.

Tons of electronic ink spilled on this. Somebody here can tell you the diameter of a 18 v 19 rim when tyre is mounted. At this point 18 rear is starting to convince even me as the tyre selection is so much better. WM3 at least on the back if you are staying 19". Others will know if the WM3 19 on the front will give you any guard clearance hassles.

If you intended to run Avon’s all you gotta do is spend a few minutes on their site, they give the rolling radius of the mounted tyres, the recommended rim width, the allowable rim widths, tyre width, tread depth, all easy to access...

Dave - obviously your choice but..
As you know I have just shifted my pegs back by 4 1/4" and there is still plenty of room for passenger foot-space.
I have reached the conclusion that the stock peg position is best suited to the Roadster and the Interstate needs partially rear-set pegs - something that is very do-able.
Maybe continue with your rear-set project in the background - will give you an option in the future with great tank capacity (and looks).
Cheers

I expect it's one of those personal things but even with a roadster set up I find the standard footrests are too far forward

Go with 2:5” rims like already said you will not regret it better handling

I think the reason for this is that the riding position actually stays the same with either tank, ie you sit further back with the Roadster tank as it feels too close to the bars if you sit just behind it. I reckon with a Roadster tank a Commando is virtually a rider only machine. I agree they all need rearsets whatever version.

No I’m going for standard sizes and sticking with tt100s I like them and the bike handles fine oh and I don’t hang about. I used to race Supermoto so I know about grip and feel :)

We’ll see but until I decide I’ll be keeping the Interstate tank.

I agree but not with panniers.

Right a night’s sleep and some further thought on this. By sticking to standard sizes I’m stuck with TT100s which is fine but I should be looking to expand my choices. So 2.5" rims front and back with an 18" rear does seem the way to go and looking at the Avon Roadrider page the best selection seems to be 100/90 19 for the front and 110/90 18 for the rear with respective diameters of 671mm and 663mm.

with this combination an I going to have and clearance issues, I’ve measured up and all looks well to me but please pitch in if you know otherwise.

Thank you for sowing the seeds of doubt as I now think I’d made the wrong decision.

I went with a 4.00 x 18 Roadrider dedicated rear tyre on a 2.5 inch rim at the rear (obviously) which is 671 x 116 wide, same width as the 110/90 x 18 but slightly more diameter (would be equal to your front tyre choice rather than smaller) along with being a dedicated rear with more tread depth. No rubbing issues, probably about 10mm clearance to the swingarm.

On the front: 3.25 x 19 universal on a 2.25 (WM3) rim which is the recommended width for that tyre. I looked at going with a 100/90 Roadrider 2.5 rim on the front but I've heard it would foul the front CNW Harley type mudguard I have.

Yup, as Dom says, 4.00 18 rear and 100 90 19 front both have exactly the same rolling radius. This is the combo I use and I like it a lot. There‘s a lot of threads on this subject, inc the subject of tread depth and tyre wear, but I’m not prepared to go into it again as the conversation always spirals into the gutter. Feel free to PM me if you wish.

You are not limited to only TT100s if you stick with stock sized 19s. Check out Avon Roadrunners too.

The bottom lines is this: there’s a lot of choice out there, if you‘re spending big dosh on wheel builds it is well worth pausing a little to ensure you buy what you really want...

I have WM 3 on the back with 400/18 Road Rider. Front is stock WM2 with 90/90 19 Road Rider , have fitted the narrower early front guard (stainless from AN) I really like the combo Both rims Flanged Akront
