New to 961?

So overall I am keen just waiting to hear back from them on a potential deal and then to try one!
Be aware that running in is a real PITA, the bikes have to leave Donnington complying with euro 4 specs which means rough running for the first 500 miles. Get the first service and remap done ASAP and the change is remarkable - actually a bike you can use!

Just out of curiosity......
Since my 961 is a solo seat model I have no personal experience, but does anyone with a "dual seater" actually subject their significant other to the ordeal of riding the 961's pillion seat?

And what comments have those pillion seat riders expressed after the experience?

Yes the dealer did mention that, I suppose just have to suck it up.

Actually the CB1100 was quite similar it came back a different bike after first service

Well my 27year old son did actually curse me for some alleged discomfort,I even gave him a dash of luggage almost in the shape of an armchair, but he might of had a point 2500 miles in two weeks with 250/400 mile days ( & had 3 days not riding)
Enough to test any bike or bottom

There is no reason to not have decat, open pipes and remap before running in, that is an incorrect misconception.

When I collected my bike from Donnington, Clem informed me that the bikes have to leave the factory “homologated” so I could not have the short pipes etc from new.
May have been that I was riding from the factory and delivery by van is different?

Yes, they have to leave the production line homologated. But there’s no need to run them in homologated. A dealer / workshop can fit the none homologated stuff before the bike is collected by the owner. There is no need to run them in, in homologated spec, if the owner doesn’t want to.

The little outfit at Donington where Clem worked, separate to the main factory, is a dealer / workshop BTW.

Damn....!!!! After finally being able to ride since December..... I remember again how much I love this bike. And now with the catless thru pipe and o2 resistance plugs!!!! I lost count how many thumbs up I got today. And I was avoiding busy areas. Pulls hard and sound great!!! If you’re new to 961 and havent ridden yet or ever..... you’re in for a treat!!!

I have the Motad "Norton Short S/S" pipes, de-cated, I can see the o2 sensors, what are these "resistance plugs" some kind or rebellion tech ?? :p

The resistance fools the ECU to think the O2 sensor is fitted and reads the correct figure so the bikes runs on the default map.

I see, this a worth while pursuit of just another "tweak" ??

Any idea where they can be sourced for testing purposes ?

Thanks

I am always in stitches when i read, that the only way to make a officialy homologated 961 work properly is actually to make it illegal by throwing away the cats, fit a straight through exhaust and fiddle around with the ECU.
For christs sake !
When i buy a new bike i want it to be right in the first place.

It reminds me of the story of the Lamborghini Countach and its not homologated rear wing.
The car left the factory as homologated without the wing.
And then "someguywhowasnoLamborghiniemployeeatall" came to the car park and bolted the wing on.

Me too, but if it isn't (as in the case of many 961s, including mine), I'm going to work on it until it runs properly. If you're a die hard Norton fan like me, and have decided you just have to have a sorted 961, the only option I could find (at least in the US) was to buy one and make some mods. Deciding not to own a 961 because it isn't perfect from the factory wasn't an acceptable option for me.

I've heard that the EURO4 models, at least after the first service, had solved some of the common issues, but they were never available here in the US.

And I have to say that I'm really enjoying the bike now that it runs the way it was meant to.

Ken

Welcome Adrian. Another way is to put a pic of your bike up on the sticky pictures thread, we all like to see what each other is riding :)

Hi mate, Ah ok thanks, just finding my way around. lots of info on here that's for sure and I think I will be needing it, I'm a Triumph mechanic so hopefully might be able to help a few folks out too.
Let me try to upload a pic on there, cheers

I admire your staunchness Ken.
The 961 is a drop dead gorgeous bike, and back in 2013 i was really tempted to have one until a friend of mine bought a black 961 (the very first to be registered in Germany)... and boy we had some hilarious rides together.

Bought my 1969 Fastback in 1997 and i went through a lot of good and bad time since.
It was like nursing a premature baby.
But it was MY BABY and at least there were a lot of people around who knew what to do.
And a lot spares available.

Hey up Fellas, just poking around on my new Domi and the O/2 sensors are disconected from the harness with the open Megaphones. I take it needs some resistor plugs for the harness connectors such as dynojet makes? Looks like its got a OMEX ECU, if so any info on where to get them in the USA?
