Today I made the 6 hour 300 mile trip to my dealer to have map 0091 loaded. I was in heavy stop and go traffic so I was glad I just took my ECU. It came out in 15 minutes and took half that to re-assemble. The dealer said just ship it but I am on vacation and did not want to let it out of my sight! I have the SBN Dominator Sport pipes w/ cats! Your dealer will need a donor bike to re-flash if you just supply your ECU.

The bike started ok cold (80F) and idled only slightly stronger then the stock map! It pulled noticeably better thru 3000-4000 rpm in the upper gears and seemed to rev much free-er up to red line. It was like a slightly different, revier ( is that a word ) motor. Still not perfect at idle but verry, verry rideable!

Revvier. Two Vees. Which remap are we talking about. Did you have 77 to begin with? I'm only about 7-8 miles away. From Gold Coast. By the way....do you, like BritTwit and myself get that vibration passing through 42-4300 rpm?. Not a bit issue, but was glad to hear it wasn't just mine. Ticked that sucker up to 120mph the other day and she sat like a rock. Since I don't always ride that way, I'm very pleased with its performance.

Oh I hope CANADA gets that map soon. Which map did you have before 091? Did they say what was changed??

Curtis, and Richard , I had the stock map, 2 years old before installing 91. Richard check with your dealer, if not for this forum and BritTwit's
perserverence, we would not know that our dealer had the 90 series maps for months. They did not even know they had them and they did not elaborate on the improvements. It is supposed to be an improvement over 76 and 77?

I do get the vibration, mine starts around 4200 and ends at 4400 rpm. With the new map it seems decreased, either that or I am passing thru it faster?? :?:

So revvier is a word???

3 weeks ago it was not available to me and was told I have the latest available in Canada. But I'll call again on Monday and find out.. Thanks for the update. Unless this 91 is more useful in some parts of the world over others?? not sure. I'll report back if anything is worth noting. I still remember the difference when I got 077. WOW!!!!!

The new maps were on a disc with service bulletins and my dealer did not even know they had them until Norton or SBN told them after our ( mine and Freds ) constant inquiries! I use the word Inquiries loosely! :D

Richard, as far as I know your bike is identical to ours, as delivered!

BP I am assuming you got the remap done at Gold Coast Are things improving there? I understand there has been some "pains" after ownership changed. They treated me pretty good when I bought the Black SF, but getting things in a timely manner was difficult.

I would really like to hear from anybody that upgrades their 77 remap for the 91 remap. I would like to know if there is significant improvement

I just remapped both of my SF's with remap 77. Unless there is big improvement, I do not know if I want to go through the problems of getting remapped again

I will have to get one of you Northeast guys to take your 961 to Gold Coast, so they have a donor bike to remap my ECU's LOL

Or Tony, how about your 961 as a ECU remap donor at MCC. Just kidding.................maybe

G81, I did get the mapping done at Gold Coast and I had to push them to get it done this week as I am on vacation. They are very busy with sales and service this time of year!

Although I am 2 1/2 - 3 hours away, I was on a first name basis with the old owners and my dog used to run around the showroom with their dogs!

Things are a bit different now, the old owners were winding down and the new guy remodeled and seems to be ramping up sales volume, not good for us "little" guys.

I should mention that one of the employees let slide that they do a huge volume with Ducati, BMW and Triumph and less so with MV Augusta and because of this it is hard to keep up with all the latest info from a low volume brand such as Norton.

They had a "donor" bike in stock, seems dealers are finally able to keep one on the floor!

All in all it was a pleasant experience after the initial trouble getting on the schedule!

Did some extensive riding today, beautiful day in the low eighties! I am still happy with improvements in the 3000-4000 rpm fueling and overall response.

The bad news is I think Norton is either unwilling or unable to correct the weak idle. Maybe they are keeping it Euro 3 and EPA compliant.

Overall I am still happy with the improvements and the power is very useable!

I noticed since I went thru 2 tanks of fuel that the vibration peak at 4200 rpm is directly proportionate to the amount of fuel in the tank!
Below 1/2 fuel the vibration is almost unnoticeable!

Overall I had a great ride and the re-map was well worth the effort!

BP. Is that your first remap? I'm on #77 and quite happy with it except for the 4200 rattle. Not sure if that's a mapping problem though. Did you have 77 first and are that much happier now? Should I go for it? It's really easy for me to ride there. 15 - minutes in traffic. I do some pretty spirited riding. Every little bit may help.

Curtis,
I’m going to GC on Friday to have my 961 remapped with #90 map (no cats, long loud cans). I currently have map #77. While this map is a definite improvement over the stock map, I still have two niggling problems that I hope map #90 will resolve, or at least lessen.

My current starting procedure is to not apply any throttle initially, simply press the starter button. This always results in the motor starting right up, and revving to about 2500 RPM. This inspires real confidence. Then it immediately dies. My resolve is to quickly apply some throttle as soon at the engine comes to life, and try to catch the revs before they fall south of 2000 rpm. Then continue to apply some throttle for 30-40 seconds. Then the engine will usually settle down to a lumpy idle, usually.

Cold running (riding before engine has reached it operating temp) has its issues as well. Before the engine is warmed up, I have what can only be described as a reluctance to rev that feels almost like surging from 3200-4000 RPM. It lasts for about 4-5 minutes of riding. Once the engine is properly warmed up, it runs like a raped ape! Great throttle response throughout the entire rpm range.

I have checked the O2 sensors in the header pipes, and the header flanges to make sure there are no leaks. After the remap I think I will replace the spark plugs with Iridium plugs to see if they will have an additional positive effect.

Both of my 961's have the exact same starting regime as yours. Will not start and idle unless I add throttle, then idle is fine. I also get the hesitant acceleration until the bike is fully warmed up (normally about 1/2 to 1 mile down the road) I write it off as being a cold blooded beast.

As far as you upgrading from remap 77 to 90, please let me know how that goes. I am running 77 on both of my bikes (2014 has SB Long DT's without cats, and 2015 has short Motads without cats) If there is significant improvement, I will see if GC can remap my ECU's using a new stock bike, if they have one on the floor

I am also going to call South Bay this week and see if Capri is willing to work with me on a map for race performance application. It is still my goal to race the 2015 961 in AHRMA next year. We have put together a Norton Race team here in Jacksonville. One guy runs a 1938 and 1947 Manx, another guy runs 1971 and 1974 Commando, and I will be running the 961. N Cubed (N to the 3rd power) Racing. Stands for the 3 distinct era's of Nortons on the team, and actually stands for Nearly Normal Norton Racing LOL

Carlos at SBN seems very confident that this map is significantly better than the 77 map.
I'll thrash it about for while, and provide a full review of the remap results.

I haven't been to the track since 1980, but may have to go to a AHRMA meet some time to check you guys out. Sounds very interesting.
I'd love to see a 961 circulate.

Well there is an AHRMA race in Jersey And, it has been late 70's since I have been on a track (and those tracks were all dirt) So you may get to see an out of control idiot run a 961, at speed, into a concrete wall LOL

Not a problem.
As long as it's done with a certain style, and flare, you can always say that you did it deliberately to please the crowd.
That's what I used to do back in the day.

Looks like I had my head screwed on backwards when I made the appointment for my remap.
Dealer scheduled me for Friday Aug 21, not this coming Friday. Good thing I called to confirm.
Dealer's lament - too much work, no workers.
$hit.

There will be a slight delay on feedback.

I've been happy with my #90 map upgraded by Carlos at SBN. I went from the factory map and exhaust system to the #90 map when I installed the SBN x-pipe cat eliminator and the SBN Sport exhausts. My only complaint is cold starting. I need to keep a hand on the throttle to keep it above 2k rpm immediately after starting, for about 30 seconds or so, or it will die. I don't know if it is necessary, but after it warms up and idles ok, I've been turning off the ignition and then restarting it without using the throttle, based on Richards comments about how the ignition key resets the throttle body idle position. The bike does hesitate in the 3.5k to 4.5k range when cold, but a mile or so of riding clears this up. My neighbors probably think I need a tune up, as I'm sure they hear the hesitation when I leave the house, but I think they are just glad to have me gone! Other than that, I think this is a good map. I've put over 1300 miles on this set up, following about 700 on the stock bike, and it's performance is consistent. Great bike! Now buying seat bolts by the dozen however, since I lose one with about every two-hours of riding!
