I am pleased to announce that the NORTON COMMANDO 961 CLASSIC

Hello , What is AIB ? Are you saying all 40 are sold ?

Highly unusual to have to insure something that you have not yet taken delivery of...

Some kind of Euro 5 work around ?

Hi Tony
Sorry, Tony, "AIB" stands for the Association of Insurance Brokers.

In UK it's this organisation that maintains the master database of all vehicles (cars bikes etc) that people will look to insure.
If you want to ensure something that's listed on the AIB database, in theory (ha ha ha) then buying insurance should be straightforward --- pick the make and model, give the rest of your details and click QUOTE ME!

Until a new model appears on the AIB list it's a nightmare to insure.
the fact that the COMMANDO 961 CLASSIC has appeared on the AIB list means that the guys at NORTON have requested it to be added.

Bottom line it means I'm another, albeit little, step closer to seeing mine delivered :) :D

Hi Eddie

I can't actually buy insurance at this point because I don't have a chassis / VIN number &/or a number plate.

No to Euro 5 on the CLASSIC, but they have got Euro 4 Homologated for UK

But I can shop around, and that's what I'm doing.
40 years since I was last on a bike, zero riding in the last 5 years , zero no claims and a "NORTON" .... yep they're giving me the run around .... but I am getting reasonable quotations AND I have time to badger then while I await delivery.
Have had some great help from MOTOLEGENDS in Guildford getting my gear & from Peter at AirVest (despite both firms struggling to get stock out of the EU)

I don't know the sales status of these bikes, just that only 40 will be made and one of them will be kept by NORTON to put on show (possibly at the Motorcycle Museum?)

That means there are 39 that will go to new owners. (it's a bit like 10 green bottles ... )

As far as I'm aware they are being offered to buyers that lost their deposits when, the (old) Norton went into receivership and for sale, presumably, if not taken up.
I 'just' happened to get lucky when I read an article about TVS taking over NORTON early December, then read on to learn these would be the last 40 COMMANDOS to be built.

So having promised myself one 5 decades ago, I picked up the phone and put down a deposit.

Essentially getting my commitment in as Norton were setting up their sales team.

It was a rare spontaneous and emotional decision for me (I'm usually ultra rational) ...
... there was no way this train was leaving without me on board!

When I got my 961 in 2016 , I left it till morning I was picking it up to get insurance, & long story short I spent all morning on phone with all brokers /companies saying no , as it was over £18k was main reason I was told at time , Aviva ( Norwich union in old money ) were only firm in the end at £700 large & I had max no claim & no convictions & done advanced driving & riding tests .
So hope u have success , and let us know when u ride it away ,few of us may come & see yer

Really happy to meet up when I get it.

I'm a few miles north of Newcastle upon Tyne in Cramlington, Northumberland. Some of the country roads and all along the coastline remind me of East Yorkshire before the Highways Agency had an oversupply of tarmac :(.

Seems like I miss understood. I know they’re not Euro 5, I was wondering if they were doing some work around to sell Euro 4 spec bikes?

Anyhoo... big plus 1 for Moto Legends, great stocks of great stuff and super helpful and easy to deal with. Price guarantee is nice too !

Old news, why are him and Tim Prentice being employed by TVS Motor, why not under the Norton company. These are the talent that should be under the Norton Motorcycles umbrella, not TVS Motor who now plan to swamp the EU with electric scooters as per their recent design registration in the EU. It would show a bit more commitment to the Norton brand and assist those in charge there now.

I suppose because the Norton endeavour, albeit high profile, is relative ‘small fry’ compared to the rest of TVS‘s business. I strongly suspect that not everybody loves Norton as much as we here do:confused:!

Progress looks encouraging doesn’t it?

Regarding the topic of using the Norton name as a rebranding exercise in other markets, like India, I personally think that’s inevitable, those are TVSs real ‘putting bread on the table’ markets. So long as it’s as well as... rather than instead of... can’t see an issue.

Depends where you see Norton in the marketplace I guess. In the distant past they were just a motorcycle brand like Triumph, BSA etc. But in ‘modern’ times they’ve positioned themselves at the premium end of the market. Last time I looked Tata wasn’t knocking out rebadged Tata’s as Range Rovers/Jaguars in India. The temptation to make a little bit of money in India trading of the brand name has to be tempered with the effect on the global market. Norton are never going to be a volume manufacturer so they need to tread very carefully or risk becoming an AJS... Just my 2c

A fair point well put!
