Just come back from a very good day at the Classic Bike Show at Stafford UK. Loads of good stuff on show so I might post up some piccies soon. But this new MK3 electric start kit from Alton caught my eye. I don't know if anyone else has seen this, apologies if it's been posted before, it's a new bit of kit to me.

This is a standard inner chaincase with the Alton kit loosely placed on it. The photo shows a much larger sprag clutch attached to the crank, with a chain sprocket to the starter drive.

This shows a new stator mounting casting machined to suit the Alton kit. So everything is in the same place which is good.

Here is the compact starter motor.

The set up is very similar to the kit sold to fit a Velocette

It's all in the development stage at the moment according to the French bloke I interrogated.

I thought they had to use their own alternator. Interesting.

The basic idea was to get the MK3 starter to work as cheaply as possible. The biggest problem with the old Norton starter was the sprag which was too small and not easily available now. I don't know what the price will be, but it would be worth getting one if the parts for the old setup are not available anymore.

Really good to know thanks for the post and pictures Cheshire bloke !! ---- do you ever get any of that awesome Cheshire cheese...my pops used to bring that wonderful crumbly stuff home and we'd scarf it up with a box of crackers, got us all hooked :)

Mmmmm Cheshire cheese :D. cjandme just to make your mouth water I had some extra strong stuff from a local farm shop a while ago, on toast and grilled, I can still taste it now, lovely.
Anyway, a bit more info on the Alton kit. There is nothing on the web site or written info, so all this is word of mouth. It is going to be under development this year and available possibly next spring for just under £1000. It's a soft start up not the sudden jolt you get with the standard starter, this will reduce the chance of damage to the sprag, which may be the source of the problems with the standard set up.
I was surprised that the existing alternator could be used, the mounting plate is every good as the original, and the engineering all looks ok.

I need a new starter for my MK3, so this Alton kit gives me another option, but for 1000 quid I might be tempted to opt for just a starter from RGM or Norvil £350 ish.

Well a thousand pounds is up there a bit. If you only need the sprag then there is one of our own here on this site who has some for about 50 bucks if I'm not mistaken. .........."I can still taste it now"..........that's just mean :)

Check the for sale section, on the 2nd page about half way down, is a listing from norton dave for the sprags. Cj
