Hi.
You can get the head back with the motor in the frame.
I use to do:
1. hold the pushrods into the head and fit it rotating from ahead to back;
or
2.remove the three head studs and the two cylinder front studs, hold the pushrods, so tath the head will enter easily, then hold the studs with the head up against the frame main tube.
or
3. First way will be more easily removing the intake rockers spindle so tath the pushrods will go up more and you will have more space to rotate the head back/ahead.
Hope this help.
Welcom and greetings from Italy.
Piero

I gave up on copper gaskets years ago, kept blowing out, but maybe just a peculiarity of my 650 motor. Composite one has been in for around 20years now. Fingers crossed. Other peers may have a different ideas. Ade

hi i think you are right some of the copper gaskets i have seen are very hard even when anealed

I've always managed to get the head back on with the engine still in the frame. It's never been necessary to pull any of the studs or rocker spindles. It's just a matter of getting the pushrods pushed up as far as they will go into the head first. I usually secure them with tight rubber bands or small zip ties that are easily removed afterwards. It just takes a lot of tilting back and forth and a little patience. Once the head is seated you have to confirm that all the pushrods locate perfectly. Good luck.

hi got the head on first time with no problems at all even with a compression plate and 2 base gaskets had a few beers to celebrate thanks for the helpfull advise on the forum
