New Member in the Cotswolds

Sadly yes, I do struggle with them. Not through discomfort per se, it’s just that first, I get pins and needles in both hands, followed by them going numb. Not good for control!
Listening to others, it’s probably early ‘carpal tunnel syndrome’ symptoms. But, if I can avoid the knife by changing my handle bars, then so be it!

Is the angle of the clipons on your 961 different than the ones you have on your 750?
My clipons on the 961 don't feel quite as bad as the units on my Ducati 999.
The 999's are angled steeper, and force a more uncomfortable wrist angle.
Maybe it would be worth while to try and find a set of swank neck clipons that fit the forks tubes.

The clip ons are no worse than on my ‘74. It’s not a fault with the clip ons.
But... the ‘74 is for short n fast ‘hot rodding’ around and track days. I want to ride the 961 further.
I looked at raised clip ons, but decided to give the ‘bars a try.
It’s nothing that can’t be undone.

My right hand gets numb even on the Sport. Same with the higher bars on the Bonneville. I really think I need to invest in a throttle lock. The bar end type.

I'm not that crazy about the clipons on my CR either, but I'm on the fence about swapping out for bars.
I bought a set of Norman Hyde M bars for my 961 which I really like and have used on other bikes.
I have to get a new upper triple tree with bar clamps from the Factory to mount them.
Problem I think will be the length of wires on the controls.

The CR model has short wires, raising the controls for the bars will require another 2-3" of wire reach.
Also, I think the hyd line for the clutch may be ok, but I might need new longer hose for the front brake line.

Hi, sorry for resurrecting but I’m a new member and the title intrigued me - I’m across in south Gloucs too so would definitely be up for a Cotswolds ride.

Regarding clip-ons, I found the angle on the standard CR bars too steep. Slightly worse than my old Panigale to be honest ! So I’ve swapped for Gilles GP-light clipons. They mount in the same place on the forks (ie aren’t raised) but have a much shallower angle; some thing like 5 degrees versus around 8 deg stock. It makes a real difference to comfort yet doesn’t need longer cables.

Hmm - starting to think there must be something wrong with me: I commute through traffic on on my CR and can empty the tank in one sitting without any aches. Maybe years 'on the drops' of racing bikes have moulded me?

the most comfortable long distance bike I've ever had (and I've had a lot) was a 1987 Suzuki GSXR1100 slabside, clip ons, rear sets the lot ,it was just so right.

That's interesting.
My Ducati 999 is a back strainer for sure, but the most uncomfortable ride I ever experienced was my 1988 GSXR1100.
In the US they were known as backbreakers.
I didn't have it for more than 2 months before selling it.
I'm a tall ectomorph and for me, the Suzuki's ergonomics were excruciatingly painful.

I can tolerate my 961 CR much better than either the old Suzuki or my 999.
However, at my age I would prefer more moderate raised clipons, of low Norman Hyde M bars.
Just personal preference.

Sam, don’t forget you were 32 years younger then.

The futuristic sci-fi “Space 1999” was still on the telly.

As was Bernhard Manning!

Yeah.
Space 1999, Martin Landau, great stuff back then.
Was '78 or '79, no?
UFO was cool too.
Enjoyed to look at the GSXR1100, hated to ride it!

I bought a new GSXR 750 in, I think, 1988. Picked it up and booked it in for its 500 mile service two days later. Picked it up from the service and rode 400 miles down to Cornwall. Then toured around the South Coast for two weeks and rode home... clip ons and all.

My wrists were stronger then !

Well it was only 20 years ago I had it but point taken, it was still a long time ago and I probably wouldn't get on with it now.
I had a K model 1127 motor after the slabby and it wasn't a patch on the earlier bike, always felt like it was gonna spit me off.

Can't say I remember Bernard Manning on Space 1999. The prospect of seeing him in a lycra space suit......
